Lover Era: Part II

My thoughts and journey to the lead up to the album can be found here: Lover Era: Part I

I fell in love with 13/18 of the songs on Lover upon the very first listen which is a pretty good indicator of how much I love this album. I'm not sure if it will ever surpass 'reputation' for me but it's solid as hell. Taylor has always been a great songwriter but she always seems to take it to a new level with each damn album she puts out. So many great lines, versus, choruses, ALL OF THE WORDS. I also am loving that she used more actual instruments in a lot of these songs. I like synth stuff too, of course, but there is something so nice when a song isn't so over done.

This is definitely an album about love in all of it's many shapes. It's also very much about sex. Like get it girl. But seriously I'm now realizing that some things aren't as literal as they sound. Like that line from 'I Think He Knows' took me off guard and also went right over my head until someone posted this meme in my Taylor FB group. HA! I'm still an innocent.

Taylor Swift Tells the Stories Behind 'Lover'

1. I Forgot That You Existed - A perfect transition from rep. A total bop. I love her little giggles throughout.

Misheard lyric:  Lived in the shit you were throwing
Correct lyric:     Lived in the shade you were throwing
Fave lyric:         I forgot that you existed
And I thought that it would kill me, but it didn't

2. Cruel Summer - This song was hyped up since we saw Ellen getting it "tattooed" on her arm in the 'You Need To Calm Down' music video. I'm not sure what I was expecting but this song is not it. I don't mean that in a negative way but I thought lyrically it would be about the "apocalypse summer" more but it's clearly mainly about Joe (and apparently their relationship starting as a friends with benefits kind of thing...get it!) THE GROWL!

Misheard lyric: Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine, I'm not buying
Correct lyric:    Hang your head low in the glow of the vending machine, I'm not dying
Fave lyric:        Devils roll the dice, angels roll their eyes

3. Lover - I've heard this song described as "a warm cozy hug" and that's the exact feeling I get when I listen to it. It's such a romantic and timeless song. The video is one of my favorites of hers ever. I have the smallest of gripes though, super tiny, I cannot ever leave Christmas lights up until January. Sorry Taylor but this is where we differ.

Fave lyric:        My heart's been borrowed and yours has been blue
All's well that ends well to end up with you

one / two / three

4. The Man - This is MY JAM and dare I say my favorite on the album? Yeah, I said it. Ok at least one of my favorites. Top three for sure. I love that she called out double standards and inequality in this song all while making it catchy as hell. Also that Leo name drop had be gasping. I mean, could you just imagine if Taylor was always photographed on a beach surrounded by male models? Just saying.

Fave lyric:       I'd be a fearless leader
                        I'd be an alpha type
                        When everyone believes ya
                        What's that like?

If I was out flashing my dollars
                        I'd be a bitch, not a baller

5. The Archer -  She totally stuck with her track 5 tradition but I think this time she did it on purpose. I love how 80s the music is. I love how vulnerable the lyrics are. I'm maybe one of the few that is ok with the song "not going anywhere". It definitely has Jack Antonoff written all over it because it screams Bleachers and Lorde and I mean that as a compliment.

Fave lyric:       'Cause all of my enemies
                         Started out friends

6. I Think He Knows - I like the beat overall and I like how strong it finishes but the first two verses just come off weak vocally. I'm sure it was intentional but it's not my favorite of hers. I will say I have fun singing the line "It's like I'm 17, nobody understands, no one understands" as if I'm still an angsty teen. Maybe I am.

Fave lyric:      Lyrical smile, indigo eyes, hand on my thigh
We can follow the sparks, I'll drive

7. Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince - One of my absolute faves! Totally up there with The Man in my top 3. I love the political undertones slipped into a high school setting. It just really speaks to me musically and lyrically. GO! FIGHT! WIN! (VOTE!)

Fave lyric:       My team is losing, battered and bruising
I see the high fives between the bad guys
Leave with head hung, you are the only one
                        Who seems to care
                        American stories burning before me
I'm feeling helpless, the damsels are depressed

8. Paper Rings - This song gives me Hilary Duff/Avril Lavigne vibes and I'm here for it. I love Jack in the background screaming "1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4 !" Give us a rock album Taylor!

Fave lyric:      Honey, without all the exes, fights, and flaws
We wouldn't be standing here so tall

9. Cornelia Street - First of all when Taylor says she "rents a place on Cornelia Street" she isn't shacking up in some studio apartment waiting for her actual place to be remodeled. She's renting this beauty in NYC! And then the owner of the place had no idea who she was. Um, sir. Are you of this millennium? I love that she's still writing about when Joe and her first got acquainted three years later. Also I think if you've ever been in love there is always going to be somewhere you could never go again if you ever broke up.

Fave lyric:      We were a fresh page on the desk
Filling in the blanks as we go

10. Death By A Thousand Cuts - Taylor confirmed this was inspired by the Netflix movie 'Someone Great' (the movie was ok - nothing great) and the director of the movie was inspired by 1989. Say what?! But this movie came out recently so word on the street is she added this one to the album late. I mean there is that photo that Jack Antonoff posted on his IG in June so seems accurate.

Fave lyric:      You said it was a great love, one for the ages
But if the story's over, why am I still writing pages?

11. London Boy - If you thought Taylor was describing a day long itinerary we can no longer be friends. I don't understand how so many fans even thought this. Clearly she lives there part time so she's listing places she's been before. And you bet your ass I'm taking notes from this song of places to visit when Dustin and I go next year. This song is cute as hell and I ALSO LOVE A LONDON BOY - Tom Hiddleston (sorry...), Idris Elba, Gary Oldman, Jude Law, Daniel Radcliffe, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Taron Egerton, Daniel Craig, Tom Holland, and so on.)

Fave lyric:       Show me a gray sky, a rainy cab ride
Babes, don't threaten me with a good time

12. Soon You'll Get Better (feat. Dixie Chicks) - This song is classic Taylor. It's raw, real, and simplistically beautiful. It's very reminiscent of country Taylor. I love Taylor's relationship with her family but especially her mom. I think what they have is so incredibly special. However, I was disappointed that the Dixie Chicks were not more vocally prominent. I would have never known they were even a part of this song had it not been written next to the title name. Dixie Chicks have been in the studio with Jack Antonoff this year so maybe Taylor will be featured on their new album too.

Fave lyric:           But who am I supposed to talk to?
What am I supposed to do
                            If there's no you?

13. False God - It has taken several and I mean SEVERAL listens to even like this song. I do love sexy Taylor. She tried something different and I applaud her for that. It's definitely not top 10 by any stretch but it's growing on me.

Fave lyric:          And you can't talk to me when I'm like this
Daring you to leave me just so I can try and scare you

14. You Need To Calm Down - This song has fueled so much drama and internet fights which I think is so silly and petty. YOU NEED TO CALM DOWN. Literally. If Taylor is quiet she loses if Taylor speaks out she loses. Girl is scrutinized for everything she does or doesn't do. I'm personally glad that this album has so many political undertones weaved into it. However, I never expected Taylor to speak out one way or another. I don't think we should assume that because you're a celebrity, because you have a huge platform, because you have millions of followers that you are required to speak out on anything. I think it's great when people do but it shouldn't be expected. With all that being said this was the first single from the album that I loved (sorry ME!). It's a sassy, fun, bop of a song with an important message for all the internet trolls and homophobes of the world. Taylor is clearly a LGBTQ ally. I loved watching her bring up everyone from the video on the stage TWICE at the VMAs and letting Todrick use one of those moments to speak out himself.

Fave lyric:         And we see you over there on the internet
Comparing all the girls who are killing it
                          But we figured you out
                          We all know now
                          We all got crowns

15. Afterglow - This song is so good. I mean who hasn't acted like a total brat in a relationship while in a fight? I sure have. Still do on occasion. But what's great about this song is that she admits fault and wants to work through it instead of blaming someone else or just giving up completely. We're all trying to do better!

Fave lyric:          I lived like an island, punished you with silence
Went off like sirens, just crying
Why'd I have to break what I love so much?

16. ME! (feat. Brendan Urie) - I think it's safe to say this is most Swiftie's least favorite song on Lover. When Taylor first released it back in April I was just excited to just have new music from her and although it's a fun time it's not her best. I keep comparing this song to Shake It Off - like it's fun to dance to with a friend in the car (and probably in a stadium on tour too!) but I'm going to skip it when I'm alone. It just didn't have the meat I crave from her that are usually found in her other songs. Also, I love Brendan Urie and was pleasantly surprised he was on this track with her. I will say that I do appreciate the song more having listened to it with the rest of the album.

Fave lyrics:         I know that I'm a handful baby, uh
I know I never think before I jump

17. It's Nice To Have a Friend - Like many others, I too, thought this sounded similar to the song that plays in the opening of Big Little Lies. It also totally gives me Safe and Sound vibes. I'm always here for indie Taylor. I would love an entire album with songs like this. My only complaint is the song is too short!

Fave lyric:           Light pink sky up on the roof
                            Sun sinks down, no curfew
20 questions, we tell the truth

18. Daylight - This song is fine. I don't hate it. I just don't love it. I don't know what it is but there is a disconnect from it for me. It's growing on me but very slowly. I like the message so much which makes me want to like the song more than I do right now.

Fave lyric:          Step into the daylight and let it go
