Currently

Bummed about: Erin not being able to come this weekend. We have been talking about her coming since my visit last year to see her. Then a few months back it was made official when she bought her plane tickets and I put in my vacation request. I got a cold on Monday and thought this would
be the worst thing we'd have to worry about. So I called out sick on Tuesday to try and get better as quickly as possible. Then I get a text from Erin on Wednesday evening that she thinks she broke her foot and is headed to the ER. Of course I crossed my fingers that it wasn't as serious as she thought. It turns out it was and then some. She was told to see a surgeon and was given the choice between surgery or wear a cast for 12 weeks. She went with the cast. I could not feel worse for her. I know how badly she (and me!) wanted to come hang out for the weekend. We had all of these plans but it just didn't work out that way. Sometimes things just don't. We're hoping to try again around Labor Day weekend. In the meantime, I'm just hoping for a fast recovery.

Watching:

Gilmore Girls - I've been dying to re-watch this series after hearing Netflix is releasing more episodes at the end of the year. I wanted to refresh my brain on everything Gilmore since I hadn't watched the show since it aired on TV. I just finished season two last night. As much as I love(d) Gilmore Girls I had forgotten so much of it. For example I totally forgot about Rory's father Chris. I mean, he plays a decent size role in the series but I honestly forgot all about him. But the show is just as delightful as it was in it's prime. The writing is so witty and fun and still 99% relevant today. Although I do get a kick out of seeing the old brick Nokia cell phones and ancient Apple computers.

The Friday night dinner scenes at Lorelei's parents house remind me a lot of my childhood. My mom and I have never been close so we are in no way anything like Lorelei/Rory, but we would go to my very proper, wealthy grandparents for dinner weekly. My grandma (as much as I love her) always criticized my mother over various things and my mom would leave just about every dinner pissed off. However, I always had a good relationship with my grandparents much like Rory. Also, since we didn't have any money my grandparents would hand me checks (just like Emily does in Gilmore Girls) to pay for regular things like karate lessons or yearbooks or a dress fro the school dance. It's interesting picking up on similarities like that long after the fact.

I have a lot to say about the romances. I love Rory and Dean. Dean is the absolute sweetest to Rory but as the show progresses she totally takes advantage of that and doesn't really treat him fairly at all. I can't blame her for liking Jess because he's always been my pick for Rory. Dean is sweet but a little too perfect whereas Jess has so much more depth. Sure he's a troublemaker but beyond that is a book-loving romantic. I just feel like he challenges Rory in a way Dean never could. So my fingers are way crossed for Jess and Rory to be together in the new episodes. If they aren't I'd prefer to see her with a new person entirely.

Now the love interests for Lorelei are a little more frustrating. She dated Rory's teacher Max whom I loved but I guess I can see how they weren't totally right for each other. And then there's Rory's dad Chris who she sleeps with on more than one occasion throughout the two seasons I've re-watched so far. I like him because he definitely seems like a good guy but how can Lorelei be so forgiving that he took off and left her alone to raise their child for 15 years. And how can Rory just be ok with him coming in and out of her life? That didn't seem realistic at all to me. And then there is of course Luke. The chemistry between he and Lorelei is so great but nothing has happened with them yet. I don't remember which season they finally get together but I cannot wait to watch it happen again.

I plan on spending my Memorial Day beginning season 3!

X-Men: Apocalypse: Dustin and I went to see this over the weekend. I love X-Men. Dare I say it's my favorite superhero/comic brought to the big screen. I love the older movies. I love the new ones. And I was even more pumped that my girl Olivia was in Apocalypse. With that being said, I wasn't overly impressed with this latest movie. My biggest complaint with Marvel (especially Avengers) is the amount of action and destruction in every single film. They take out an entire city every movie like it's nothing. I find it way too over the top. I prefer more character progression and dialogue than an added 15 min. fight scene with giant explosions. X-Men characters are my favorite. The scenes where they are learning about their powers or walking around school are some of the best. And in the last two X-Men movies the Quicksilver slo-mo scenes are perfection. I hated Apocalypse. This villain didn't do a damn thing for me. And my girl Olivia played Psylocke who barely spoke the entire movie. What a rip! I read an interview with her where she said she was offered the role as Vanessa (Deadpool's girlfriend) but she turned it down because she didn't want to play the girlfriend. I can understand that but her role as Psylocke was so small that I'm not sure it was really any different. I really liked all of the 80s clothes and references.  So yes, I enjoyed the regular scenes but could have done without 75% of the explosions.

Preacher: Dustin and I just tried this new show on AMC. I know nothing about the comics so I had no idea what to expect from the show. It has a Quentin Tarantino meets True Blood feel though which I'm totally digging. There where a lot of "what-the-fuck" moments in the pilot that totally kept me intrigued to keep tuning in. I especially liked the whole Tulip sequence.

Game of Thrones: Ok, I'm sure EVERYONE is watching this as they should be but I believe this is the best season in a long time. I'm not saying there have ever been bad seasons but there have been moments (usually in the beginning of the season) where he plot drags. This season they have just gotten straight to business with every episode. I like that certain characters are finally coming back together and that the whole story is progressing at a faster pace than before.

Listening to: Thrice's new CD came out Friday so Dustin and I have been playing it at home while we clean, in the car, and at the gym. It's good. Real good. Thrice is one of those bands that consistantly churns out quality music. Not only that but they somehow have a different sound and vibe with each new CD which is really hard to do. They have so much range it's crazy. They have songs that are pure rock, to a little more pop punk, to total indie. Dustin, Pat, and I cannot wait to see them live in June. We're actually going to see them twice (on the same day). We are going to their in-store acoustic performance at Park Ave. and then later that night they will be at HOB.

I've also been listening to the new Tegan and Sara CD which could not be any more different from Thrice. Ha! Well actually only 4 songs because the whole thing isn't out until 6/3 but since I pre-ordered it I get a little taste of what is in store. And it's good. It's very pop driven like their last one 'Heartthrob' but with a more 80s feel. It's catchy as fuck but with total sincere lyrics. I'm so pumped for the rest of it.

In Cat News: Dustin and I bought cat carriers for both our little furballs. Dustin got Cheeto the "Deluxe" partly because he's huge and also because Dustin wants our cats to have nice things. Ha! I bought Olive a top-loading carrier which makes putting her in there so much easier. Just open and place inside. Boom! We wanted to get them carriers for trips to the vet and what not but mainly because we wanted to get them on flea and tick medicine. Amanda told me about this mobile vet service in Seminole County where they set up at different businesses different days of the week and you can bring your pet for a bunch of different things. So I figured that would be easiest since we could go on the weekend. Dustin and I loaded the kitties up in the car and drove only a couple miles away to parking lot of True Value. There were a couple dogs being checked out but we didn't have to wait at all which we were thankful for since it was hot as balls. Poor Olive was panting with her tongue out from the heat. I had to fill out a quick form and the vet had to make sure they were healthy which took all of 3 seconds. They wanted to weigh both cats in a fabric carrier but Dustin got us out of that. Could you imagine us trying to put Cheeto in another carrier in our car? Total mayhem! We used the weights from when they got shots in March which worked. We got 6 month pills for both of them. We only had to pay for the pills themselves. The visit itself was free which was awesome! We loaded them back in the car and cranked that A/C. My friend Nicole suggested that we give them wet food mixed with dry food and stick the pill in the middle so they can't tell the difference between the food and the pill. It worked like a charm on our little kittiot Cheeto. But then he tried to eat Olive's food so we had to quarantine him so he didn't double dose. She finally ate her pill too but it just took a little more coaxing. So now they are good to go, at least until next month...!

Excited about: The motherfucking Pens! Pittsburgh Penguins! Yeah they totally beat the Tampa Ray Lightning to secure a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Sharks. So only one more round until one of those teams gets to hoist the cup up over their head. (Let's hope that that team is a cute black and white bird!) So Dustin and the Buds (sounds like an 80s hair band) are super pumped. So pumped that Dustin and Joel are going up to Pittsburgh next week for Game 5 with Fiddy and Big Al. Dustin bought his plane ticket a few days ago. He will be there for exactly 24 hours which is just long enough to say hello to his family and hang with the buds at the game! But if he goes to Burgatory without me there will be hell to pay. I'm so excited for him but also totally stressed out. Sports are hard on my health!

What I Wore #49

Do you see what's on my shirt? TINY GLASSES! When I saw this at H&M I was like "I need to own this shirt!" and Amanda totally agreed. And when Dustin saw it he called it an "Ashley shirt". It's super light and the cuffed sleeves take up the hipster to an even higher level. I've worn these gray jeans many of times but they always stretch out by the end of the day which I hate. I want this to retain their proper skinniness forever. So that's really my only negative about this outfit.

Dustin Says

Me: That Chris Evans is such a nice looking man!
Dustin: Alright grandma.

You're the tic-tac in the morning breath of life.

When I came home last night you were on the bed everywhere! You were basically Michelle Branch.

I don't want our cats to have used stuff. I want them to have the things we never did - like a cat carrier.

I used to be in so much better shape for fighting. Now the only thing I'm fighting is heart disease.

Me: When is game seven?
Dustin: Thursday.
Me: God help us all.
Dustin: There isn't enough blood pressure medication in the world.

Phoebe and I got together earlier this month for the first time in I don't know how long. I had seen her and Dosha briefly at the Taylor Swift concert but before that it must have been years. Anyway, I credit SnapChat for bringing her into my life. It's so fun to be able to meet up for lunch!

Date Night: Amy Schumer

It was about a month ago that I got wind of Amy Schumer coming to town. I love Amy but I know Katie LOVES her. So I suggested we try and get tickets. Katie was totally on board and BAM next thing you know we were writing it on our matching Taylor Swift wall calendars.

I had never been to any comedy show of any kind before this. I haven't even been to the Improv. So I was extra excited to experience my very first one.

Katie and I both raced to my house after we got off work last Monday. Since she came from Deland I drove to the show. First we stopped for a fancy ass romantic dinner at the good ol' Chick-fil-a. We scarfed down some nuggets before heading out to the CFE Arena at UCF. Traffic was of course a nightmare which is to be expected all of the time in these parts but yet I'm still just as surprised and annoyed when it happens. We found parking very easily and made our way inside a good 30 minutes before the show was to start. We waited in the "Tequila Trainwreck" line so Katie could try her signature tour drink. I didn't taste it but it was a lovely shade of turquoise. I can certainly appreciate a pretty drink when I see one.

The arena was freezing. I'm talking negative degrees, Elsa inspired, parka required kind of cold. I wore pants but my arms were nothing but little goosebumps the whole damn time. Side note: Who are the people who refer to them as "goose pimples"? I think we can all agree that just sounds ridiculous, right? Katie borrowed one of my cardigans from the backseat of my car and used it as a blanket over her legs. I was pissed I didn't grab my other one. (My backseat is a sea of cardigans.) We huddled up together and waited patiently for the show to start. But then 8:10pm came and nothing. And then 8:15. And finally a band started playing instrumental jazz music. Like I said before, I have never been to a comedy show so I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. They played for a good 15 minutes before the first opening act hit the stage. If I'm remembering it correctly there were 3 openers, all of which were pretty good.

Then finally Amy came out and everyone went nuts. She made several jokes about her dress to start off with and then it flew by from there. She started out so strong. Like my face hurt from laughing kind of strong. The end wasn't as strong but it was still pretty damn good. Katie and I had the best time cracking up over one inappropriate joke after another. My only complaint was the girl behind me. She had the kind of laugh that would have been the focus of an entire Seinfeld episode. Like it was bad. It was very dry, monotone, and almost forced sounding. Katie and I just side eyed each other every time and by the time it was over we just had to laugh about the horrid laugh.

We got back to the parking garage which was a nightmare. I should have known. The last two times I have been to the CFE Arena (Paramore with Dustin and FUN/Tegan & Sara with Erin) we waited for 30-60 min. trying to get out of the parking garage. This time was no different. By the time we made it to my car there was a line blocking us. I couldn't even back out so we were forced to just sit back and snapchat. Ha! After about 30 or so minutes of waiting, a bunch of cars started backing up and going the opposite direction in order to get out. I totally followed them and we were out in no time. UCF parking just sucks whether you're a student or there for an event. We got back to my house late and were both exhausted but still riding the fun we had earlier in the evening. Date night was a total success.

Mom's Retirement Party

My mom's been talking about her retirement party for about a year now. Just a few weeks ago she sent me her 60 song playlist. I had some of the songs already but I downloaded the rest and put them on a few CDs for her to play at the party. There were lots of Beatles songs of course but also some Neil Young, Creedence Clearwater, Prince, Bob Seger, Carpenters, etc. It was a good mix of songs about partying and moving on to the next chapter.

Dustin and I drove to John's house all the way out in Geneva. Geneva isn't my favorite place but I toughed it out for the party. The whole time we were there I didn't have cell service at all. Needless to say, I would not be happy in the country. Also, I have a requirement that I have to live at least 10 minutes from a Target. AND it could not have been hotter. The party was mostly inside but it's getting to that point where everyone's air conditioners are struggling to keep up. So yeah, it was hot and if you know me at all you know that I do not like to be hot. I am a total grump when any sweat starts to form. Again though I toughed it out.

My Aunt Sarah really did a great job helping set everything up especially the food table. She and other people brought dishes and the rest was mostly from Publix. You can never go wrong with a Pub Sub. I also really enjoyed her punch! She also made little floral arrangements with the flowers my mom bought. Everything looked so nice.

My mom had requested the year 1976 (when she started at her school) be put on the cake but when she went to pick it up the year read "1776" which made me almost fall out of my chair laughing. I mean, what the hell! I kind of wish she left it but they fixed it before she left. Ha!

As the party winded down, she opened her gifts. She got several gift cards, a really cool Beatles lyrics book, and the frame and other things I got her. The frame was definitely a hit! Etsy for the win!

We finished up the afternoon with a performance from Grey. My mom had been asking him since Christmas if he would play at her party and he totally did. It was a nice way to end it.

It's crazy to think she's been at the same work-place for 40 years. She's probably the last of her kind in that regard. I'm not sure what it is now a days but no one sticks it out. It's got to be a mixture of the economy and the fact people like to change it up and have experiences at new places.

So here's to a new chapter!

Now on Tour: Katie and The Girls

I met up with Katie and the girls (sounds like a punk band - ha!) last Sunday for some girl time aka shopping. We started at Target where we made sure to brush up on our karate skills before entering the bathroom. It was incredibly scary and by scary I mean people were just there to pee and leave. Imagine that!

We Targeted, we Old Navy'd, and we ended at the mall. During this outing Katie bought the girls one of those Jelly Bean games and promised they could play in the food court after they ate lunch. So that's exactly what they did. Katie and I died laughing watching them go back and forth eating these jelly beans. There were regular flavors like lime and berry but also in the mix were dog food, lawn clippings, and spoiled milk. Just the thought of that last one makes me gag. UGH! Katie is a brave soul and totally tried TWO jelly beans. The girls tried to get me to join in and I firmly put my foot down. Usually I am game to, well, play games but this one I had no desire. I thought back to that time where Miranda came to our Halloween party back in 2010 and brought Bertie Botts Every Flavored Bean over and I almost threw up in my living room. Yeah that was six years ago and I AM STILL NOT OVER IT. So I had to decline their offer and instead record their hilarious reactions. Perfect compromise!

Katie was trying on some clothes when Kierce said she had to pee. I let Katie finish and I took the girls to Dillards to use the bathroom. We were waiting for Katie to meet us at Dillards when Kierce saw one of the girls in the perfume section moving around.

Kierce: "Is she dancing?"
Me: "No, she's putting perfume on."
Kierce: "I want perfume!"
Me: "I'm sure she'd spray you if you ask nicely."

So the three of us walked over to her and Kierce and Aubrie both asked. Not only did they get a spray of perfume but she gave them both samples. And then when I smelled the scent I, too, asked for a sample. The scent happened to be Chanel Chance Eau Tendre. They have good, very expensive taste. I wish I could explain in words how amazing this perfume is but I can't. I've been obsessed with it for the last week. I have used it every single day and I'm already worried when I'm going to run out. I of course have looked up the full bottle online but it goes for over $100 and I just can't justify spending that kind of money on perfume right now. I've actually never bought my own perfume. Dustin has bought me two as gifts over the years and I go back and forth between them. This scent will definitely be on my Christmas list this year. Until then I'll just have to bring Kierce and Aubrie with me to get more samples.

Dustin's 31st

Yeah yeah, I'm really late on this one. Dustin's birthday was 3 weeks ago and I'm just now getting around to blogging about it. But I wanted to knock out the vacation blogs first before I started to forget certain details. Anyway, here it is.

Dustin's birthday fell on the Sunday after we got back from Portland. We took the day super easy since we were still recovering from traveling all day Saturday. Pat came over that afternoon and the three of us met up with Matt, Rachelle, and Addilyn at Red Robin. We party real hard. But honestly, all you really need are a few good friends (and cheeseburgers) to have a good time. We wanted the good times to keep on rolling so we all headed over to Target and then hit up Academy Sports. I told you we party hard. You probably couldn't keep up.

Dustin and I, but even more so Dustin, like to keep birthdays pretty low key. It's those simple moments of just eating a meal together or laughing in a parking lot that really warm our (cold, dead) hearts.

Happy 31st Dustin. I swear we were just celebrating our 21st together...
