What I Wore #22

I love wearing jeans. They are always my go-to for casual wear aka anytime I have to go out in public. But since it's summer and hot as hell I'm trying to wear more shorts to spice things up. These mint, cuffed shorts are so cute AND super light. The material is just so comfortable and most importantly breezy! Ha!

I got this shirt at the Deland Indie Market last fall. (Side Note: So sad I missed the last TWO. Next time. Next time.) It's super comfortable and appropriate since Florida is usually splattered all over the news in the worst possible way. Also, it reminds me of Ron Burgundy which I'm pretty sure is the point.

Texas: Part II

Saturday we woke up early, ate some lovely cinnamon rolls, and got ready for the day. We had a 10:45 pedicure appointment and was running very close to being late. Erin took me to "her" nail place which is the fanciest nail salon I've ever been to. We both ended up picking a shade of coral/orange and were on our way with our snazzy toes.

IMG_4870 IMG_4871

We worked up quite the appetite while getting our nails done so she took me to one of many taco joints. Fuzzy's was the bomb dot com. I'm still dreaming about this place a week later! Erin ordered nachos and cheese for us to share. And the cheese was to die for. I ordered a beef taco and a chicken taco. I probably would've only ordered one if I had known they were so giant but I still ate most of everything. Go big while in Texas, right?

After lunch we did some shopping. I can't remember if we went to Ross or TJ Maxx but it was one of those awesome little stores. Erin made out like a damn bandit. Then we headed over to the mall. I don't know why but I really like to visit malls in other cities. Erin's mall is bad ass! It definitely gave The Mall at Robinson a run for it's money. They of course had every store ever but on top of that they had a Cheesecake Factory (like Millenia), a Dave & Busters, and an AMC movie theater all connected to it too! AND we just so happened to go during The Lego Americana Roadshow where lots of historical buildings were made out of legos. It was pretty awesome! The only thing I hated about the mall is that it was packed. Like about-to-give-me-an-anxiety-attack packed. I don't like crowds so we both were kind of annoyed by that. We decided to see a movie since it was just one of those rainy days that was just begging us to stay indoors. We saw Age of Adeline (Erin's second time seeing it) and we LOVED it. I'll expand on why I loved it in my next 'Currently' post.

After the movie, Erin gave me a tour of Frisco. Everything is so new. The town looks like it's not more than 10 years old. Every shopping plaza is fancy, every neighborhood is fancy, and everything is stone or brick. Frisco has everything you need so I can totally see why Erin doesn't frequent Dallas much. They have every chain restaurant Florida has and then some. The only thing they don't have is Publix and I didn't see WaWa anywhere. It's pretty impressive. Apparently Frisco is like the headquarters of headquarters. All these huge companies have been moving to the area. That town is a booming! They have fields of cows and then a fancy plaza. A field of wildflowers and then a fancy neighborhood. It's the perfect mix of small town and big city. They basically have done what Palm Coast has been trying to do but never succeeded at.

I asked her to take me somewhere sweet so we ended up at one of her favorite places: Smallcakes. I'd say the name is appropriate as these suckers were far too large to be cupcakes. A small cake is exactly what they had going on. I got a Peanut Butter Cup for myself and one to take home for Dustin. Erin and I dropped by a CVS to get some random shit and on the way out we ended up at the Redbox. (I didn't tell her it was my first time ever using a Redbox. Shh!) We got another great movie which I'll discuss in another post. Once back at her place we got tatted up! I meant to have us do it earlier but my time in Texas was such a whirlwind. I can't believe it's already been a week. It came and went so fast!

Erin and I tried to go to bed early because we had to get up at 3:30ish but we stayed up talking in her pitch black room late into the night. We never get that kind of boo time anymore so sleep can always wait. The Texas area has had some pretty crazy weather. It's been raining for weeks and some areas have really bad flooding. Well, I had one of those natural disaster alerts go off on my phone at 2AM and it scared the shit out of me. 3:30AM came real faster after that nonsense. I woke up feeling like shit. Thank you, period! Erin dropped me off at the airport around 4:30 AM. I was so nervous I wouldn't be able to navigate the place.  I walked in and the place was a ghost town. There were no people in there except employees - the total opposite of MCO a couple days prior. I was able to print out my boarding pass within minutes. I was the only one in the security line which was awesome and eerie. The security guy asked about my fake party hat tattoo on my middle finger. "Wow, the ink is still so dark!" I replied "Oh it's fake!". HA! Security took all of 3 minutes. The longest part was taking my shoes off and putting them back on. Even though Erin dropped me off at American Airlines my plane was boarding on the other side of the damn airport. So I had to take their weird tram around the whole thing. The tram doors opened and it was packed full of people. I almost didn't have a pole to hang on to for when the thing sped crazily around each terminal. I made it to the right place and side eyed the whole damn time. That airport is probably my least favorite I've been to. The layout is awful. It's basically just a series of hallways and there are restaurants and stores scattered on the sides instead of more of a mall/food court vibe of most airports. As I walked to my gate I noticed a Victoria Secret/PINK/Dallas Cowboy store. Then it occurred to me this was the first time I had seen anything Cowboys related. Hell, I hadn't seen anyone wearing Texas sports team apparel the whole time I was in TX. How bizarre is that? However, I distinctly remember texting Dustin that there was a guy in a Pirates hat while at the aquarium. I thought the Cowboys were "America's Team" but apparently no one gives a shit about them. I'm used to going to Pittsburgh (no matter what time of year) and seeing every person, baby, and pet decked out in a variation of Steelers, Pirates, or Pens gear. I mean every where you go it's in your face. One of the things I love so much about that town is that it feels like you've automatically got something in common with every stranger. You're all on the same team. I thought Dallas would be like that but it wasn't at all. It's definitely a cool place though. The downtown area is so much bigger than Orlando but not as crammed as Pittsburgh. I'm happy I got to come to a new place and Texas isn't at all what I thought it would be. It was much better than I had expected. I'm even more thrilled that Erin and I got to finally make some new memories. I'm glad I got to see her new world.

I thought the flight back might be delayed with all the crazy weather but we left on schedule even though they wouldn't serve us drinks until we were past the storm and over Louisiana. Florida was just as I left it - bright and miserable but home.

And, it was good to be home.

Texas: Part I

I have never had any desire to go to Texas until Erin moved there a year and a half ago. No offense to the Lone Star state but it just isn't on my destination list. Although, Friday Night Lights certainly helped it's appeal. Saracen forever!

Erin and I have discussed me coming to visit since before she even left. I knew I wouldn't be able to do so for awhile due to a new job and finances. I'd check flights randomly and they were always a million dollars. Or close enough. Then one day back in March I checked for flights around Memorial Day weekend. I first searched for Sat - Mon but then I was given a steal of a deal from Fri - Sun. The only catch was both flights departed at 6 AM. I can do early, so I went for it and told Erin after the fact. She was pretty shocked/excited but was able to get off work. We had to wait a long 2 months until our reunion. She's been back to Orlando a few times since she moved but I only saw her during one of those trips and all we had was a couple hours for breakfast and a quick trip to Target. So we hadn't hung out like we used to hang out since she moved. It's so crazy to me because I used to see her just about every day of the week. But that's how life goes. You never truly know how good things are until they aren't anymore.

I set my alarm for 3:15 AM on Friday. I actually set three alarms because I wasn't sure if I'd wake up at such a insane hour. But I was anxious so I woke up right up on the first alarm. I took a quick shower and gathered a few remaining essentials and then woke up poor Dustin. I felt horrible that I had to get him up at such a ridiculous hour but he was surprisingly a good sport. I drove to the airport to give Dustin time to wake up enough to drive himself back home. The roads were empty thankfully but we still got a million red lights so the trip felt incredibly long.

Dustin and I said our goodbyes and I was off. Now let me back up here. I have only flown alone once in my entire life and that was 10 years ago when I went to visit another friend. I've always traveled with family or Dustin. I knew I'd be fine but I was definitely battling some anxiety while walking around the airport. The first annoyance was the fact that MCO was PACKED. I've never been there when it was so busy. It took me 30 minutes just to print out my boarding pass. This gave me more anxiety because I hadn't even gone through security. Security was no different. Tons of people and a lot of them just taking their sweet ass time. I made it through and finally felt some relief. But then I took the tram to my gate which happened to be in the shady part of MCO. I didn't even know there was a shady part until I was in it. We always fly out of the nice part. As I'm seated at my gate a lady announces that all of the computers on this side (the fucking shady side!) are down and we will be delayed but she doesn't know how long. The room filled with lots of annoyed sighs - me included. About twenty minutes later we boarded. I was even more nervous about the actual flying part. I'm not a terrible flyer but I'm not great either. And I'm far better when I have someone with me to ease my mind. Shout out to Dustin for his lovely voicemail and Katie, Nicole, and Rachelle for the sweet texts before take off. It definitely gave me the little boost I needed. The flight itself was super smooth. I listened to my headphones for a bit and read Slaughterhouse-Five on my Kindle the rest of the time. The girl next to me was so polite and asked if she had fallen on me while asleep. I assured her that she hadn't bothered me at all. With about 30 minutes left in our flight we started to chat a little. I learned that she was going to Texas to meet a guy she met via a Facebook comment (the brother of a friend of hers) that she had been talking to for months. She was so nervous and it reminded me of when I drove to Palm Coast to meet Dustin for the first time. I told her that story. I told her we did the long distance thing for awhile. I told her that we just celebrated 10 years together. I'm not sure if it helped her feel any less nervous but I hope so. I never got her name but I really hope she and this guy had the greatest time. I'm a hopeless romantic so I'm going to believe that they did.

I was so ready to get off the damn plane and see my boo! Thankfully I didn't have too much trouble finding her. Just like a dream, I walked outside and she was right there waiting in her car. It was so surreal to see her in person again. In her new car. In her new city. She actually pinched me several times to make sure I was the real deal. Aren't you supposed to pinch yourself to see if you're dreaming? Ha!

We drove into downtown Dallas and got breakfast at Ellen's Southern Kitchen. It was hands down one of the top three breakfasts I've ever had. The pancakes (& syrup!) and hash browns were exceptionally wonderful. We were in breakfast heaven. It was the cutest little place too! I could picture it being very busy on weekends or for dinner.

After breakfast we walked into the building across the street to see if a shop was open. It wasn't but we still strolled through the building because it was the coolest. I loved all the brick and wood. Speaking of brick, there's tons of it in Dallas and it's all so pretty.

The aquarium was just down the road. We thought it wouldn't be that busy since it was Friday. Well, we just so happened to go on Field Trip day. Not even kidding. What school has a field trip this late in the year? Just saying. It was fine but it definitely got crowded in areas. I've been to aquariums in Pittsburgh, Denver, and Tampa and I love how they are all so different. The Dallas World Aquarium is very jungly (Is that even a word? No? Oh well.) There are multiple levels and it all surrounds this waterfall/monkey habitat. Our favorite animal was definitely the penguins. I think they are everyone's fave. But we had the most fun in the tunnel with all of the sharks. We sat next to each other and after watching them all take a few laps got our phones out. We played the shark selfie game which is where you sit with your phone held out in front of you and try to quickly snap a shot when a shark swims behind you. We were horrible at this game but couldn't stop laughing the whole time. Eventually I just got up and took some of Erin and the sharks and then she took some of me. We had such a good time at the aquarium. If you're ever in the area, it's definitely worth a visit!

Next up, we stopped by Klyde Warren Park. She was told by several co-workers that it was cool. And they were totally right. It had a separate dog section which was just the cutest. It was definitely one of the most modern parks I've been to. My favorite part were all the sports/games. They had ping pong tables, foosball, mini golf, frisbee, and football. We of course wanted to play ping pong so Erin gave them her license to hold on to and they gave us two paddles and a ball for free. We totally suck at ping pong although I think the wind was a little to blame. Did I mention it was in the 60s AND windy? Yeah we were a little cold. Back to our ping pong game... So yeah we sucked but it didn't stop us from having tons of fun. Also, all the running around warmed us up so it was a win!

We stopped and got fresh lemonades and OH EM GEE were they awesome. I'm not sure I've ever had a lemonade that good before. There was a little lounge area so we just sat down and sipped on our drinks for awhile. It was so nice being able to talk/sit quietly next to Erin. There's just something about being in someone's presence that's so much better than a silly text or phone call. I like that you don't filter yourself as much. I like that you can just have a flowing conversation. You don't have to worry about punctuation, emojis, or if they can hear you. We could've stayed in that spot the whole trip and I would have been perfectly content.

After our stop at the park, we headed over to the Dallas Aboretum and Botanical Gardens. Now one thing I noticed while in the Dallas area were the flowers. I mean there were flowers downtown, at the park, and it's totally common for wildflowers to line the streets. Erin even told me it's illegal to pick them. But after a quick google search it seems as though that might just be urban legend. Interesting!

But we wanted even more flowers which is why we went to the Aboretum. We were worried we'd have to scratch it from our itinerary since the weather in Texas has been pretty wet as of late. Thankfully the rain held off and we were able to enjoy ourselves. This place was huge. HUGE! And gorgeous. I mean there was something new to ooh and ahh over at each turn. We had just arrived at the end of a wedding ceremony. What a perfect place to get married! Erin and I also got to take a tour of the DelGoyer Estate which is located on the property. I didn't take any photos for fear our tour guide might be as nasty about it as the one we had at Falling Waters. FrontMaster bedroom and bath. Library. You had to walk through a courtyard outside to get to any of the guest bedrooms which was very strange to me. Overall it was a gorgeous (huge) home!

Erin drove us to her neck of the woods aka Frisco. We stopped at In-N-Out for lunch because like most east coasters, I had never eaten there before. I'm always seeing celebrities (Ex: Taylor's entire gang, Emma & Olivia, Miley, Anna) and/or bloggers and friends eat there. I mean, In-N-Out has a reputation for having some of the best fast food in all of the land. Dustin and I were even planning our next vacation around In-N-Out locations since he had never eaten there either. One of the first things I asked Erin after she moved was how she liked In-N-Out and she replied "Ehh, not that much." I honestly thought she was crazy. How can it not be amazing if so many people are backing up the claim? So she took me there, like the good friend that she is, to see for myself. I ordered a cheeseburger and fries. Standard stuff. For one thing our order took forever. STRIKE ONE. The burger was not great. It was just as Erin described - ehh. STRIKE TWO. The fries were terrible. I literally ate two and that was two too many. The grossest fries I've ever had in my entire life. STRIKE THREE. What a total bummer. So yeah, I didn't enjoy it at all. Erin was right! All the celebs were wrong. Five Guys still takes the top spot in my cheeseburger loving heart.

IMG_4854 IMG_4858 IMG_4856

We got to her place and immediately took Charlie out. He was just as cute and crazy as always. I'm pretty sure he remembered who I was because he totally snuggled right up. We FaceTimed with Dustin for a bit before eating some pizza and watching a movie. It was such a crazy busy day but so worth it. Boo power!
