Today was a rough day.
I'm feeling so many things but the one world that kind of encompasses everything would be 'overwhelmed'. Work has been exhausting this week. I feel like I'm barely keeping myself above water. My whole department is feeling that way so there is comfort in knowing I'm not the only one. We're all working together the best we can. But it was just so much extra today. It seemed like there were extra phone calls and emails and fires to put out. I felt like I was constantly moving or talking or problem solving. Me being the introvert I am I need time where I can just take a breather and not having that stresses me out even more.
It's not only been a hectic work week but politically I am feeling crushed.
And emotional.
And defeated.
And sad.
And drained.
And out of options.
Just this week...
Mike Pence broke the Senate tie to allow states to defund Planned Parenthood.
Trump signed an Executive Order that will undo Obama's climate policies.
Congress voted to allow internet providers to sell your browsing history. Thank these guys.
That all happened JUST THIS WEEK.
Fuck women's healthcare.
Fuck clean air.
Fuck privacy.
So yeah I'm feeling all the fucking horrible feelings. I'm not giving up. No no no no. If anything I'm going to be doing even more than I already have been doing. We have lost so many battles but the war wages on and I urge those who have been fighting the good fight to continue on as all. And those that haven't been involved, please care. And even more than caring please act. Numbers matter and the more we have the better.
So I left work feeling anxious. Really anxious. I tried to talk myself out of going to the gym about 10 different times. But I still went. To those that work out or run on the treadmill on a regular basis, do you just have days when your body feels heavier? Each step feels harder than ever? I don't know if it's real or if it's all mental but I felt like my body had these imaginary weights on them. I did a full 30 minutes though.
Afterwards I went next door to Tijuana Flats. I figured ending my day with tacos would be the way to go. When it was my turn the manager took my order. While doing so he asked me how my day was going. I am maybe the one person who doesn't lie when asked this question. I just wear my emotions on my sleeve so might as well tell the truth, right? I responded with a sigh and said "I've certainly had better...tacos should help". When I tried to give him my card to pay he said it was on him and that he hopes I had a good night. I gave him this look like are you fucking kidding and then proceeded to thank him 20 times. I was so genuinely taken aback that I almost started crying. It's not the money but the fact a stranger was so randomly kind. Sure, the tacos helped but the kindness spoke even louder.
When I walked in the door Dustin ran and gave me a big hug before I could even put my stuff down. Again, I felt like crying. I nuzzled into the nape of his neck and breathed in his freshly washed skin. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. As I type this I still feel anxious but I also feel a bit better.
I'm grateful for the reminder that kindness wins.
Always.
Nevertheless, she persisted.

Nicole's Engaged
So Nicole went on vacation to Mexico last month with her boyfriend (Nick) and a group of friends and came back an engaged woman! We were all so excited for her we threw a little engagement party for her at work. We made rings out of donuts, bought ring pops, and dangled a bunch of pictures of them from the ceiling using fishing line. Yeah, we go all out! We also got her a wedding planner, and best of all, a coffee mug that says "I'm getting meowied". She's a total cat lady like me so it was perfect!
Nick just so happened to be dropping her off that day so we tried to be sneaky and came up with some excuse for him to come inside. Except he was on a tight schedule and didn't have time to come in. We would have liked to surprise them both but just surprising Nicole was awesome. The minute she walked in and saw what we had done she immediately started crying. I totally knew she would!
Congratulations!

Katie's 32nd
Like I mentioned in my previous post Katie had a decade themed birthday dinner. We all dressed up and met for BBQ at 4 Rivers. Katie came dressed to the nines in a very glam 20s ensemble. It was so obvious who the birthday girl was because she sparkled all night long. Her friends Jess and Misty came as 40s pin up girls (and totally nailed the barrel curl!). Tommy had a 60s Rat Pack thing going on while Dustin just wore his Mighty Ducks shirt so I guess we'll throw him in the 90s. I of course went with the grunge look.
Katie had made a reservation but there was all kinds of confusion about it. Thankfully we got it figured out and we all got to eat together like originally planned. We all had a blast laughing hysterically at inappropriate conversation topics. Katie has so many wonderful people in her life. I'm glad I got to hang out with them again and meet others I've heard so much about.
I was thinking during dinner all the different birthday memories we've had together. There was of course the infamous "Mad Props" 20th, the low-key ice cream gathering for her 22nd (when she was pregnant with Aubrie), the time we rented that creepy cabin in the woods but totally had a great time, the time I came over and ate pie with just her, the girls, and her parents, last year's fabulous brunch, and all the others I'm forgetting because we are old as fuck (not really but kind of). I don't care how old we get as long as we get to keep celebrating together!
Hope this year's celebrations were as special as you are!

What I Wore #65
Remember last summer when I went to a 90s Bowling Party? Well while trying to figure out what to wear for that party I came across this perfect Nirvana shirt. Who in their right mind would actually get rid of this?! It's in great condition and fits me to a T. I never ended up wearing it for said party. Instead I went with a more late 90s preppy look. So when Katie told me she was having a decade themed birthday party I immediately knew what I was going to wear. GRUNGE all the way! I was just a kid during the grunge 90s so I never really got to fully embrace it but I did for Katie's birthday. I was so pumped for this outfit that I started getting ready like 2 hours in advance and the restaurant is only 2 miles down the road. Ha! Dustin complimented me multiple times and said "This is a good look for you!". I might just have to grunge it up more often. The 90s are back...why not?!
Shirt: Thrifted
Jeans: Thrifted (Mossimo)
Flannel: Sophie & Trey
Shoes: No idea. I literally have had these since I was 16.

Tattoo Advice
So you want to get a tattoo? I may not be covered like a lot of others but I made my share of tattoo mistakes when I was younger. Do not be me.
I got my first tattoo on my 18th birthday. It's a butterfly; and not like some cool butterfly but a butterfly I saw and liked from a temporary tattoo sheet. Yeah, I know. At the time I liked it and at the time I really wanted a tattoo. Originally I had wanted a dragonfly but I couldn't find one I liked. I was too young and naive to realize I could have one drawn up for me. I will never forget having a posse of people with me (cousins and friends galore). It's a pretty small (thankfully) tattoo so it was over quick. My cousins took me home and I'll never forget my mom being mad I didn't invite her along. The thing was this was one of the first things I got to do myself as an official adult. Who cares about buying lotto tickets or buying cigarettes? Not me. I was 18 now and godammit I was going to get inked. So no I didn't want my mother there. I wanted to fly free...or permanently ink something flying on me. Either way. Do I regret this? Kind of but not entirely. The experience was great and so was the company. I have played with getting it covered up over the years but I also kind of don't want to. It's my least favorite tattoo but it was my first and that holds some sentiment to me. Also it's on my back so I never have to see it which certainly helps. Ha! That all being said at least I never got a barb wire tattoo. Those make me cringe. Sorry Pamela!
I got the tattoo on my wrist with Katie in downtown Orlando. Again, I was on some mission to get tattooed and it had to be that night. The guy who tattooed me was a douche. I mean, I'm sure Katie and I were giggling and singing "Build Me Up Buttercup" which could come across as totally obnoxious to others but it didn't warrant douchiness. That was the only time I didn't feel comfortable with who was tattooing me. I was 19 and way too timid to ever speak up or ask for someone else. I remember us going to Jason's house where a bunch of people were hanging out after I was done. I took off the bandage (which was the perfect blood duplicate) and showed everyone. A couple months later Dustin complimented it when we first met. He said it reminded him of wrought iron.
THINK ON IT
Once you get an idea in your head of what you want just hold onto it for awhile. And by awhile I mean at least a few months if not longer. I love 99% of my tattoos but they were also all thought out. Not only would I play around with the design and placement in my head but I would keep photos or screenshots of inspiration. There have also been tattoo ideas I've had that now I think back on and cringe. So thankful those never got past the idea stage.
RESEARCH
I don't plan on ever just popping in a tattoo shop again*. That's what I did for most of my tattoos. I was just a walk-in and the first artist took me. That could have ended up SO bad but thankfully they all did good work. Research the shit out of your tattoo artist OR if you don't know who you want to go to ask friends and then research the artist. I found Cortni (who did my floral heart cover-up, envelope, and Dustin's Batman) via Katie's suggestion. I started following her on Instagram to see if her work would be something I was interested in. Instagram didn't exist back when I was 18 but it is your greatest tool these days. Check out an artist's work prior to getting tattooed by them. Also kind of feel out their personality. If you're going to be in such close contact with someone you want to feel 100% comfortable.
STICK TO YOUR GUT BUT ALSO BE FLEXIBLE
Sometimes (a lot actually) the design you have in your head won't quite work as a tattoo so your artist will suggest other ways to make this work. It's up to you to decide what you aren't willing to change and what you are. A good artist will take in your feelings on it and do their best to make it work in a way that you love. If they are combative or just aren't considerate of your ideas then move on to someone else.
SPEND THE MONEY
Don't get tattooed just because it's cheap because it will probably also end up looking that way. Good tattoos are expensive but they are worth the money. Also, remember to tip!
DRESS APPROPRIATELY
I find it much more comfortable (especially for longer sessions) to wear workout clothes. These clothes are stretchy and comfortable and move with your body. I don't want to be uncomfortable for an hour or two. For example, I remember wearing jeans to get my clover done. The clover is right on my hip - yep, right where my jeans sit. I wish I would have worn a cotton dress or skirt. Not only was it uncomfortable to be tattooed in but it was uncomfortable to leave in. I actually had to get that tattoo touched up a couple weeks later because I kept wearing pants that rubbed the spot. I wasn't always the smartest.
PREPARE
I always eat a meal right before getting tattooed (well at least now I do) and everyone else should too. I also bring a drink and snacks. I have naturally low blood pressure which can make me sometimes feel light-headed so I make sure to keep something salty nearby. Also, I bring my kindle, earbuds, and make sure my phone is charged of course. I love talking to the tattoo artist but sometimes they want to concentrate and I'm totally cool with that. I can entertain myself no problem!
HEALING PROCESS
Do exactly what your artist tells you to do. Wash it when you're supposed to, lightly coat it with aquaphor when you're supposed to, and lotion it up when you're supposed to. Don't skip out on any of the steps otherwise you could risk fucking it up. Depending where your tattoo is it might be best to have a spouse or friend help you care for it. Dustin was a lifesaver with my big back tattoo. Also this should be self explanatory but don't go swimming or go out in the sun.
PERSONAL OPINION
Saniderm - This is a clear, breathable, tattoo bandage. It helps keep your tattoo moist (sorry Katie!). It is also waterproof. Dustin and I (I say I because I was the one who applied the damn thing - ha!) used this on Dustin's Battoo and it worked so well. The most annoying part was trying to figure out how to apply it. But once it was on Dustin said it was so comfortable. Not only did he not have to worry about applying aquaphor (you wear this thing for days at a time) but blood and ink didn't get on our sheets or his clothing. He got tattooed on a Friday and by Tuesday/Wednesday it was 90% healed. I will definitely be using this next month!
Hush - This is a numbing gel specifically designed for the purpose of eliminating pain while being tattooed. The description also says it can reduce redness and help your tattoo heal quicker. Cortni told me about this because I was having a hard time in one of my sessions. I never ended up using it but I might for future tattoos.

No names especially of the romantic variety. Don't let the idea of tattoos not being professional hold you back from a tattoo that you're passionate about. I've had a desk job since I was 17 and not once have I been asked to cover them up. Do you!

Celebrating Twelve at Hollywood Studios
Dustin and I used our last Disney day pass for our anniversary. Earlier in the year we visited Epcot for Rachelle's 30th and Animal Kingdom. But for our 12th St. Patrick's Day we went to Hollywood Studios MGM.
We left the house at 7:30 and didn't run into any traffic at all on the way there. I couldn't believe it but I also wasn't going to complain about it. We arrived about 30 minutes before the park opened. They let us into the park at 8:45 but we still had to wait a few minutes until they would let us into Star Wars. We were literally the first Star Wars group of the day and Dustin and I were passengers 2 and 3. By 9:15 we had already checked that one off the list.
Next up we went to Muppets 3D which is a cute show in this really cool theater. There were all of 12 people in the theater with us. It was amazing. Dustin and I aren't the kind of people who just wander around theme parks. We schedule and plan and try and be as efficient as possible and so far we were killing it.
On our way to the next ride we stumbled upon Chip-N-Dale (or Chip-N-Dip as Dustin used to call them as a kid). There were only 2 families in line so we decided to jump on board. When it was our turn one of them pointed at my scarf and gave me a thumbs up. Then they "asked" Dustin where his green was and he showed them the band of his boxers (which were shamrocks). The one chipmunk had to sit down from laughing so hard. Once composed the four of us got a picture together.
Then we headed to The Great Movie Ride (which I don't remember ever going on in my life). I loved how the outside of it looks like the Chinese Theater in LA with handprints and footprints to match. Dustin and I have both visited the real thing separately so it totally brought us back to those vacations in high school. It was just as fun now as it was then putting our hands and feet in the cement. The wait was only about 15 minutes but then we got skip a huge chunk of the people because we were a "part of two". Score!
We then made our way over to the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater just as they opened at 11am. We were already hungry for lunch and as always we were hoping to avoid crowds. They took our name and we were in the backseat of a car within 10 minutes. I couldn't believe how efficient the day was going. Yes, of course we were having fun along the way but I love being able to check things off my mental list. We had a really nice waiter who was on top of it. We spent 90% of the time in the third seat of a car alone. Just Dustin and I in this really cool setting eating lunch at 11ish. It was kind of amazing. We got this spinach-artichoke dip to start out with which was amazing. Dustin ended up eating a steak and I got a turkey sandwich. I loved the whole experience. I don't understand why drive-ins aren't a thing anymore.
We hurried over to the Indiana Jones 12pm show which was perfect for our full stomachs. I couldn't remember if I had ever seen it in real life or if I'm just remembering that one time the Tanner family went to Disney. The stunts were really impressive and entertaining. Dustin had been telling me for weeks all he wanted to do was go on Star Wars and see Indian Jones and he'd be happy. Done and done!
We went and saw the Beauty and the Beast show next which was perfect timing with the new movie coming out this weekend. The musical (even though only 30 min.) was so good and just like I remembered it.
At this point we had digested enough that we were ready for some kind of treat. I've been craving a Mickey ice-cream bar for years (seriously) so that is exactly what we got. It was everything. We strolled around some shops and looked for a special item for Katie (which they didn't have). The poor Disney employee even searched the Disney i-pad to see where I could find the item but no luck. Womp womp.
We got to see the March of the First Order whichh was badass. It was fun seeing Storm Troopers just walk around the park giving people a hard time. We also got to meet Kylo Ren. I'm not trying to brag but yeah I totally am. I couldn't stop laughing while we were in there and Kylo says to me "control yourself" which of course made me giggle even more. Oh Kylo you softy.
We were done with everything by 3pm. That's how we do. I don't know how people stay from open to close. No, nope, no thanks. That is way too exhausting. Dustin and I are all about getting in, doing our Disney thang, and going home and taking a nap. Ha! Although it wasn't so easy on Friday because of course there was bumper to bumper traffic the entire way home on I-4. This is another reason I wouldn't want an annual pass. Who can deal with that on a regular basis and not go insane? I try to avoid I-4 west at all costs. I mean, I go to Ikea and Mall at Millenia like maybe once a year because of this. I know, I know I sound 80 but actually my soul is more like a 90 year old and I'm proud of it.
It was a great way to celebrate TWELVE years together. I'm so lucky that this relationship just keeps getting better with age. Sure there are days I miss 20 year old us and the excitement that comes with a new relationship but I wouldn't ever go back because everything is supposed to move forward; we are supposed to keep moving on together. This is exactly what I had hoped marriage would be. I love the routine of it, the safety, the partnership, the constant laughs, and I'm more happy with this family of four now more than ever.
