A Thankful Little Day

Dustin and I have been planning for months to spend Thanksgiving with only each other. We don't mind a quieter, simple celebration of the holiday. But then at my grandpa's memorial service last weekend, my family talked us into coming up to Gainesville for Turkey Day. Well, a long story short, Gainesville unfortunately didn't work out. So we were back where we started - just the two of us.

We woke up early and watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Anyone else see the 'Kinky Boots' number? We've come a long way America! It definitely caught me off guard but I totally like the message they were trying to get across of being true to yourself. I still found it weird that it was a part of the parade. It just seemed completely out of place.

Dustin called his grandparents and as always it was a really entertaining conversation. They are so cute and funny I can hardly stand it. Before I even had a chance to call my brother, he called me. My sixteen year old brother called me first to wish me a Happy Thanksgiving! That made me so happy.

Later on, we moved to watching the 2013 National Dog Show which was really neat to watch. I loved seeing all the different kinds of dogs and rooting my favorites. I was so excited when a standard schnauzer won the Working category. But in the end a foxhound won Best in Show. They are all winners to me! So cute!

After the dog show, we started making linner (late lunch, early dinner). I made green bean casserole and sweet potato casserole while Dustin was on steak and mac-n-cheese duty. We had tipped the A-1 sauce bottle over because there was only a little bit left. But when we went to finally pour it out the whole thing exploded all over ME! Of course. Sigh. So I immediately put my sweatshirt in the wash while Dustin cleaned up the floor. Then we sat down to eat around 3PM. We actually sat at our table which hardly ever happens. I had Brand New playing on my computer in the background and Dustin and I had a really nice meal together. We definitely took our time and savored each bite. I ate everything on my plate.

We spent the rest of the afternoon watching football, reading Harry Potter, and just lounging around. Erin came over that evening and brought vanilla ice cream to top off our apple pie. We all had a bowl while introducing Erin to Cards Against Humanity. I feel like you can really weed out some people with that game. Ha! Erin passed the test as I knew she would.

We ended the holiday with a Steelers loss. Womp womp. Oh Steelers, what are we going to do with you?! Oh well, it is what it is. The day wasn't what I had planned but I'm learning to just roll with the punches and enjoy what I've got. I would have loved spending more time with my family but I still had a great time at home. And that's all I can really ask for. I've noticed that it's always the little things that I'm most thankful for. The every day.

Grandad Joe

My grandfather passed away last weekend at the age of 91. His health had been failing these past few years so it wasn't a total surprise but then again it was. We all know that the end is coming for us but when it actually does it's still surprising some how. It's a confirmation that nothing and no one is permanent. At least not in a physical sense. But then again photos and memories can fade too.

Untitled

When my grandmother died in 2002, I remember it knocking my world over. It was my first real experience with losing someone I had been close to. Her memorial service was my first as well. And although I was sad and missed her, her death changed something in me for the better. I didn't take everything for granted and I slowly started to let go of people who brought me down.

When I think back to my childhood, I can't help but think about my grandparents. They were a huge part of it. I saw them at least once a week until I was in high school. And now that my grandfather is gone, it's a weird feeling. It's what he wanted and I don't blame him, but it's still weird that he isn't here any more.

Untitled

He wasn't someone I confided my deepest secrets to. We didn't even hang out that much alone. We were not terribly close. But he has always been around. Always there. Every holiday. Every birthday. He sent me a card for my birthday every year, even after my grandma was gone.

He caused our family lots of stress these last few years. We didn't agree with some things he was doing but that's life. We aren't all going to agree with everyone's life choices. He was stubborn and outspoken. But he was also incredibly generous and one of the funniest people I've known (even if he didn't necessarily mean to be).

He was our crazy Grandad.

He was a dentist and world traveler. He went on tons of mission trips setting up dental clinics all over the world. I remember his cabinets always being full of dental products. My cousins and I were always so excited to get the latest electric toothbrush.

I thank him for every cavity he filled of mine and that tooth he pulled to help with my braces. I remember going over to his old office and pretending the light that he shined in people's mouths was a microphone. It's also because of him that my teeth are straight. He obviously had dental connections and my mouth is forever grateful.

He also had a passion/love/obsession with photography. I remember after every trip he and my grandmother went on, he would have hundreds of photos developed and they would both spread them out on the dining room table to look at them all. There were multiple cameras around his neck no matter where he was. I remember once there being an entire shelf of cameras - old, new, the works. He even let me borrow one of his cameras when I took photography in high school.

He and my grandmother paid for me to take karate with my friends for my entire year of 7th grade because my mom couldn't afford it.

He came with my mom to my high school graduation.

He's the reason I got to go to Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Denver and Colorado Springs. I'll never forget him driving us through the Hollywood hills with it's super windy roads. He was an awful driver to begin with so the hills were not helping matters. But I had these hiccups that wouldn't go away but then his driving scared me so much they just stopped. My cousin, aunt and I had a good laugh over that!

The man loved Costco. He bought everything from there. He even used to take my cousin and I there (whenever she was in town) for pizza. Ha!

He let Dustin and I get married in his backyard. He even wore a purple dress shirt and tie on our wedding day to match all the purple decor.

He loved Dr. Pepper.

He loved listening to and playing classical music. I remember getting into his car multiple times and jumping because Beethoven was playing so loudly. This was probably due to the fact he was hard of hearing. Ha! And oh the memories of my cousins and I going to town trying to pump his organ (the instrument) in their family room. He also had a piano and I would pretend I actually knew how to play.

Untitled Untitled

He had a fascination with technology. I was introduced to AOL because of him. He had a computer way before I ever did. He was always buying new computers, video cameras, and all those gadgets from Sharper Image.

Every time I stayed the night with him and my grandma they would watch Jeopardy. As a kid I thought it was the most boring show in the world but now I get it.

Yesterday, my family and I went to his memorial service that was held at his church. It was nice talking to everyone and hearing different stories. I liked looking at photos of him and my grandma that I hadn't seen before. The service itself was a little too formal and religious for my taste but if that's what he wanted then they did a good job.

What a life he had!

We all went out to eat afterwards. It was the first time our family had all been in the same place in years. It's sad that it takes a death to bring people together. I mean, it's no one's fault. We're all busy living in different cities, living our own lives, just working and/or going to school. I get it. But life goes by quick and I hope we can get together as a group more often.

It's strange to think that both my maternal grandparents are gone forever and how our parents are getting older, and so are we. Life is crazy. So is death.

It reminds of that John Mayer song 'No Such Thing'
And all of our parents
They're getting older
I wonder if they've wished for anything better
While in their memories
Tiny tragedies

Fucking life, huh?

I've been having a rough few months. Lots of shit that I can't really talk about. Lots of shit I don't really want to talk about. This week, though, is probably one of the worst I've experienced in a long time. Things right now are changing. Some hopefully for the better, some not so much. Life has knocked me down - hard. I am sad. I am overwhelmed. I am a huge ball of anxiety. But I am also strong. And like everything, this too shall pass.

For those that read this blog, I just wanted to give you a heads up that I am not myself lately. I haven't felt much like blogging or anything that I enjoy, really. So I'll be on a little break. Maybe a few more days. Maybe a week. I don't know. These things and feelings are unpredictable.

Double Feature

Last Saturday Dustin and I went to see TWO movies. We planned the day in advance with such precision, it would make most people sick. Thor at 10AM. (We chose to see this at the earliest possible showtime because we knew it would be crowded...and it was.) We would be out around noon which would of course be the perfect break for some Five Guys. Then back to the theater to see 'About Time'.

Thor: The Dark World (Why is every super hero movie have the word "dark" in it?! Dumb.) was everything I hoped it would be and more. There were lots of Asgard scenes, maybe even more so than Earth. The humor was spot on, just like in the first movie. It wasn't over the top stupid like the humor in Transformers, thankfully! That Darcy! Oh and there was a pretty great cameo too! There were a few really sad moments that I totally shed a tear over. I'd like to go more in detail but I will keep this spoil free. I love Thor (Chris Hemsworth) BUT my heart really beats for Loki (Tom Hiddleston). He is hands down my favorite villain. He is so deliciously evil but also very charming. HOW DOES HE DO IT?! It remains a mystery. Team Loki!

Then we went to see About Time which was (you guessed it) about time. And so much more. It's very much a love story but not in the typical sense. Duh, he time travels! I loved how even the simplest moments made me all warm and fuzzy. I loved the relationship Tim (aka Bill fucking Weasley!) had with his father (and his entire family). Dare I say I have a little bit of a ginger crush... Dustin and I walked out of there both saying to one another we'd have a kid in a second "if there was a guarantee THAT's how it would be" but then we both sighed. Wishful thinking. Even though I will never have that relationship with my parents or with my own never-going-to-exist child, I still like to see it played out on screen. I take it in and it makes me happy. Good for them. Good for the real families that are actually like that. You are a rare breed. Every time I see London and the English countryside/ocean I immediately want to move there. Everything about England seems a million times better than the states. So much charm! So much awesome. This movie was brilliantly done. I can't wait to buy this sucker on DVD and watch it a million times.

The last time Dustin and I had a double feature day was back in the Summer of 2009. We went to see District 9 in the morning, ate lunch at Chili's (in Ormond), and then saw The Time Traveler's Wife (also starring Rachel McAdams, also about time travel! Ha). I even went back into the depths of my LiveJournal to read about that day. Memories!

Since we saw two movies, we saw TONS of movie previews. Here are the ones I want to see!

X-Men: Days of Future Past - DUH! This looks epic.
Winter's Tale - After seeing the preview, I came home and bought the book on my Kindle.
Diana - I've always loved the Royals and who didn't love Princess Diana?
That Awkward Moment - Looks like a cute romcom.
Endless Love - At first I thought it looked cheesy but by the end of the trailer I wanted to see it.
Romeo & Juliet - Me and the damn romances, geesh! I've seen the 1960s R&J and liked it. I've seen the 1990s R&J and LOVED it. Still love it to this day. I'm pretty weary of another remake but I'll give it a chance.
The Hunger Games: Catching Fire - Katniss is about to fuck some shit up!

Paramore

This past Tuesday Dustin and I saw Paramore for the first time ever. We decided to eat dinner at Cracker Barrel before heading over to UCF, which was probably the worst decision of our life. The food was great but made us incredibly sick (and we didn't even order the same thing)! I'll spare everyone the gory details but I honestly didn't think we were going to make it to the show. (Side Note: I emailed a complaint to Cracker Barrel the following day. On Friday, I got a VM from a very southern woman calling from their headquarters in Tennessee. She called to see how we were feeling and to tell us that she was sorry about our experience but they didn't receive any other complaints that night. She also said they sent us something in the mail as an apology. We don't really have any desire to go running back there anytime soon but damn fine customer service CB!) We made it to the UCF Arena around 8:30PM and got the best parking spot ever! The show had started an hour before but since Dustin and I weren't interested in either of the opening bands, we had already planned on showing up later. We took our seats while one of the bands finished their set. Paramore came on around 9:15 and played until 11. They were amazing! I can't say enough nice things about the whole show. Hayley's voice was perfection. And so was her energy. She never lost steam and just jumped and danced her heart out the entire time. They played most songs from their latest album and then of course their hits from previous albums. She also sang a little Fleetwood Mac which was such a fun surprise. She talked to the audience so much, probably more than anyone I've ever seen live before. It was fun to here her talk about their own experiences in Orlando. She told one story about living in Winter Park for a few months and how their manager made them go running every morning to prepare for their tour. She also gave a shout out to The Social and Backbooth. Pretty neat! And for their song, 'Ain't It Fun' they brought out Oviedo's Hagerty High School choir. And towards the end of the show she pulled a girl named Rachel up on the stage to sing a part of the song. Rachel KILLED it. She had just as much energy as the band. The whole time I  kept thinking to myself, "How is this the first time I've seen them?!". I can't wait until the next time they roll through town. Dustin was really impressed with them too. And it takes a lot to impress him, especially musically. He likes Hayley Williams and he knows all of their songs (because I play them really loud while I'm on my computer and he's 5 feet away from me playing his Xbox). I know he isn't exactly a "fan" but he had a great time so that's all I can ask for. Although now after seeing them live he just might be an official fan. We drove down University with our ears ringing talking about our favorite parts of the show. It was late and I knew I'd be exhausted at work the next day but I didn't care. I stopped at 7-11 so we could get some drinks. The gatorade and Dustin's Fruit Punch was just what our dry throats needed. All in all, a wonderful night (minus the Cracker Barrel incident we do not speak of.)

I totally forgot my real camera so my photos did not turn out great. AT ALL. I could kick myself but what are you going to do. Not a damn thing. That's when I thought to check out all the (PUBLIC) hashtags for #paramore #paratour #ucfarena. So I screenshot a few of my faves and obviously kept the Instagram name visible so to give them all proper credit. Thank you fellow Paramore fans!

Don't forget about Thanksgiving!

I couldn't believe (STILL. CANNOT. BELIEVE.) all the Christmas talk going on the second Halloween was over. I swear people were washing off fake zombie blood from their costume one second and untangling Christmas lights the next. I woke up on November 1st and the whole damn internet was buzzing excitedly about Christmas everything - movies, songs, decor, food, etc. That prompted me to send out a tweet to all of the 5 people who follow me that read:

Let's just all calm down on the Christmas music/tree talk .You're going to hurt Thanksgiving's feelings.

I don't get why everyone wants to rush Christmas, other than that they love it so much they want it to last as long as possible. But that still doesn't make sense to me. I love my birthday but I'm not one of these people who celebrates it all month long. I get one day. I enjoy that day. And then I just have to wait until the following year for another day. No big deal!

I've always celebrated holidays by the month they fall in. October is for Halloween. November is for Thanksgiving. DECEMBER IS FOR CHRISTMAS. This is probably just part of my very anal personality but it's who I am and I'm not going to apologize for it. Celebrating Christmas BEFORE Thanksgiving just throws me all kinds of off. One holiday at a time!

The thing that bothers me the most by this extra love for Christmas is that it is almost as though Thanksgiving is just being shoved aside like the red-headed step child of holidays. Thanksgiving may not have as much going for it as Christmas but that doesn't mean it should just be overlooked.

Thanksgiving is a time where the air really starts to take a dive even though everything outside looks warm and cozy with it's yellows and browns. It's a time where you can really reflect on the wonderful things in your life and be thankful for each and every one. It's watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV.  It's spending extra time with family and friends, whether that be just you and you cat, or you and your spouse, or you and a house full of 20 people. It's eating tons of turkey, green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole (with mini marshmallows - obviously), and then washing it all down with the pie of your choice. It's unbuttoning those jeans to watch a NFL game and having a four day weekend to do whatever you'd like! It's that feeling of going to bed with a full belly and an even fuller heart. Cheesy, yes, but that's kind of the whole point.

Ways to celebrate Thanksgiving during the month of November and on the actual day/holiday weekend:

Movies to watch:
Pieces of April - Katie Holmes rocks in this. Dustin and I actually own it on DVD.
Addams Family Values - Remember the Thanksgiving pageant?!
Son In Law - I mean, Pauly Shore in the 90s. Need I say more?
V for Vendetta - Remember, remember the 5th of November...
Free Birds - Out NOW in Theaters! I haven't watched it yet but it looks cute and is all about Turkeys!
TV Shows - Some of my fave TV episodes are the Thanksgiving episode! Especially 'Felicity'! 'Friends' also had some pretty fantastic Turkey day shenanigans. Oh and I found these Buffy gifs on Tumblr that are awesome.
And then there's this wonderful article I found - Thanksgiving Special: Top 10 Most Awkward Dinner Scenes in film.

Music to listen to:
The Thanksgiving Song - Adam Sandler
Anything by 'The Early November' JUST because of their name.
What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Coming Home - New Found Glory
Thanksgiving Song - Mary Chapin Carpenter
Sweater Weather - The Neighborhood
Interlude: Holiday - Paramore
Embers & Envelopes - Mae
Kind & Generous - Natalie Merchant
Gone Till November - Wyclef Jean
November Rain - Guns N' Roses
