What I Wore #25

Nicole gave me this rad Marvel sleeveless shirt for my birthday. I was going to wear it with some jean shorts but I was trying to think a little outside of the box and went with a new skirt instead. I love the mix of casual but girly. Everything is cotton and incredibly light which was key since it's been a million degrees lately. Also, out of all the outfits I've worn lately this one got the biggest reaction from Dustin. He kept telling me how pretty I looked which totally made me melt into a ball of happy goo.

Thoughts On Skin

I've been thinking a lot about skin lately. My skin. Your skin. That sounds kind of creepy but I swear this isn't some kind of Silence of the Lambs post. The one thing I've noticed as I've started to age is how much my skin has changed. And because of that reason my skincare regimen has changed too. No one gives a shit about their skin when they are young. And I think that's a huge mistake. I mean, I don't think I even started moisturizing until my late teens/early twenties. Yikes!

SUN
I grew up with the thinking the more sun your skin saw the better. My mom was/is an avid tanner. Not tanning salon style but straight up lay out in the backyard and bake. I remember every summer she would pull out her lawn chair in my grandparents backyard and lay in the sun for hours while I'd swim or explore. I don't remember ever wearing sunblock which isn't to say that I never did. But I do not remember being forced or told to wear it. My  regular skin pigment is moderately fair. However, I can get extremely tan if I expose my skin long enough. As a teenager I started laying out in my grandparent's backyard just as my mom did. I'd go to the beach and use tanning oil. After high school, I had my first tanning bed experience. I remember going with Katie or Erin. We'd pick out little hearts or playboy bunny stickers at the front desk and bake for 20 min. What the hell were we thinking?! I know I was thinking I looked better tan. I felt like I looked healthier and it hid imperfections like stretch marks and zits. Thankfully I grew out of that. I have not had a tan/sunburn in 5+ years. I remember the exact moment I got really serious about sunblock. Dustin and I had gone to the springs with Matt and Rachelle and we both got an incredibly bad sunburn. Mine was so bad I had blisters form on my cleavage. Dustin's was so bad that he said his back felt like it was being cut with razors. We were miserable for a good week. I decided right then and there in all my pain that I would use sunblock religiously. And I have. I never use anything less than 50+ SPF. I also make sure to reapply when needed. I have the spray. I have the lotion. I have the special SPF lip balm. I use it all. Not only do I not want to go through the misery of being burnt but I also have finally realized how important it is to protect my skin in regards to cancer and aging.

This story alone proves that tanning is awful. Don't do it.
Also, just being out in the sun without sunscreen is terrible. Don't do it.
Keep sunscreen in your car, purse, house, beach bag, etc. And use that shit!
And PLEASE WATCH THIS. It confirms the sunscreen is the bomb diggity.

FRECKLES
I'd like to preface this by saying that I love freckles. I love mine and yours. Seriously. I think they are beautiful and I absolutely hate when people cover them with makeup. However, none of us are born with freckles. Freckles pop up the more and more we are exposed to the sun. So the more sunscreen, sadly the less freckles. But it's more important to protect your skin than have those cute little beauty spots. Over the years I've looked in the mirror and thought "Is that a new freckle?" or "When did that pop up?". Recently I noticed a weird freckle on my upper lip line start to form. It pissed me off at first because it looked like dirt on my lip. And a dirty lip is not cool. But over the past couple months I've learned to accept it. Kind of. I'm trying. I've also noticed a flesh colored mole pop up on my right side of my chin. I mean, none of these things changes my appearances that drastically but it's just weird to see something permanent show up out of nowhere. Overall I'm very happy in my skin - freckles, moles, chicken pox scars and all.

No freckles (on my face)! Pretty sure I got shoulder freckles very early on.

MAKEUP
As most of you know, I don't really wear makeup. I'd say I wear makeup maybe 3 times a week. And by makeup I mean, mascara, BB cream, and lipstick (but usually only on weekends). That's it. I don't even know what foundation, concealer, contouring, etc. is. I've always believed that natural is better. I just have never been interested in the look, time, and money it takes to be fully made up. I feel like there is a point where someone is wearing too much makeup and they don't even look like themselves (ahem Kardashians). I want to still look like me. And the best part is Dustin isn't a fan of make-up. He has told me several times he thinks I look best without it which of course makes me feel that much better about my typically naked face. Anytime I do wear my very minimal make-up I am religious about making sure I take it off before going to bed.

MOISTURIZE
I take a shower every single day. I very rarely miss showers unless I'm deathly ill. So my routine is to take a shower in the morning and immediately after getting out moisturize aka lotion up my entire body. I'm talking feet, legs, arms, stomach, chest, and neck. I think most girls stick to legs and forget their skin everywhere else, even the skin that doesn't feel dry. I moisturize my face twice a day. Once in the morning after I get out of the shower and once before bed. In my teen years I had incredibly oily skin on my face but as I've aged it's become much dryer, so it's even more important to me to keep it hydrated. Speaking of hydration, I also drink a ton of water. That's actually my main drink these days. As much as I do like water, I much rather have a Dr. Pepper or Apple Juice. And I do enjoy those but just not nearly as often as I used to. Water does so much good for your body and even though research hasn't really proved it's benefits to the skin, it certainly can't hurt. I'm a believer that hydrating from the inside out is key.

I'd like to note that posting so many photos of my own face made me cringe but I felt it necessary to really show the changes that have occurred. I mostly wanted to post this because I find it fascinating that our bodies continue to change - sometimes for the better and sometimes not. But also because skin care is important and we should get into the habit as young as possible.

What I Wore #24

Here's the 'What I Wore' workout edition. Ha! So I quit the gym a couple months back and totally lost all motivation for working out. Now I'm trying to get back in the swing of things. When it's hot as hell (it was 99 when we took these photos) I always opt for my workout shorts instead of pants. They are high-waisted and oh so stretchy which is exactly what I like when I'm going to be moving around.  My tank isn't a work out specific clothing item. I could wear it out and about and I do. Multi-purpose! I think the little bugs are so cute and yeah I want to still feel somewhat cute while I'm getting all sweaty. Last but not least are my Nikes. Dustin got these for me last June for my birthday and they still look brand new. I love these damn things. They are so light and cushy...and kind of cute too.

Laughs, Tears, Presents, & (Root)Beers

I met up with Katie and the girls last week so we could do a birthday gift exchange. Aub's birthday was at the end of May, mine was of course just a week ago, and Kierce's is in mid July. So we met halfway at the Sanford mall. We ate some dinner while the girls enjoyed rootbeer floats. Afterwards, I gave them their gifts. They got a Disney trivia game to share along with some clothes. I have never known two kids who love getting new clothes as much as these two. Usually kids see clothes and throw it aside looking for something better. Not these girls. They surprised me by wanting to wear the clothes I got them right then and there. Kierce put her new shark dress on over her clothes in the middle of the food court. Ha! And Aub did the same thing with her new glasses shirt. It made me feel so good that they loved their gifts. Oh and they sported their patriotic sunglasses too!

I was next to open my presents. Katie got me Taylor swift socks. I saw a pair like these while in Pittsburgh but they were of Troy Polamalu. I remember wanting them so bad! And now I have Taylor ones! YES! I plan on wearing them to the concert in October. She also gave me a very cute yet simple necklace. I'm not one for a statement necklace. I like the ones that are subtle and this one is perfect. I also got this cute little wooden art piece that says "Life Is Sweeter When You Have A Best Friend". Oh how true it is. She also typed my "birthday card" on her actual old school typewriter. It's so cool! So yeah, I made out pretty damn well. Katie really outdid herself. I'm lucky to have her and of course Aubrie and Kierce too!

We decided to do some shopping. I mean, we were at the mall! We both got a few things at H&M and I found a cute skirt at CottonOn. We promised the girls if they were good while we shopped that we would take them to the playground inside the mall for a bit. Except when we got there it was gone! It had been replaced by some weird animals (that cost $10 for 15 min!) you ride around like a car. Um what? Aubrie was disappointed but she was ok. Kierce on the other hand was heartbroken. She broke down and cried. I totally got it. I mean, haven't we all looked forward to something, no matter how small, and then when it didn't work out were completely beside ourselves? Hell, I still have times like that as an adult. I felt bad that she was upset. We all did. As we walked to the parking lot we cheered her up enough that she stopped crying. I told them I had one last gift for them. So Katie drove me on the other side of the parking lot and I got a balloon out of my car and brought it back to them. I then started to say my goodbyes while sitting in Katie's car. Kierce started to cry again. I looked at Katie and she said "She's not good with goodbyes." I never like seeing Kierce cry but it was nice that she enjoyed my company enough to have such strong feelings about me leaving. I stayed in the car a little longer and by the time I really did say goodbye she seemed to be doing much better. Until next time ladies!

Nerdy Thirty

So, I'm officially 30. TEN. TWENTY. THIRTY. I immediately think of Deana Carter's Strawberry Wine.

I still remember when thirty was old.

You and me both girlfran.

I'm not upset about being 30. I'm not over here having some quarter-life crisis or anything but I admit that it's weird. That's the word that describes it best. I don't feel thirty. But then again how is thirty supposed to feel? If I had to pick an age, I think I'd be 27 forever. It's young but old enough to still be taken seriously. But we don't get the privilege of picking our age. We all just have to keep moving forward. Or we hope to keep moving forward.

Turning 30 was different in the fact that it was kind of a slap in the face, a gentle kick in the gut, a cruel reminder that time goes really quickly. So I've been making a list in my head of some things I've been wanting to do but for whatever reason have been dragging my feet on actually doing them. I'm not going to share my list just yet but maybe I'll write about it as I check things off. I know a lot of newly 30 people get depressed about what they haven't done yet and it usually pertains to being married, having kids, or having a dream job. I'm happily married, perfectly content with my choice not to have kids, and love my job. So none of that applies to me.  For me, 30 is a big push to keep checking little things off. I'm really excited to be where I am in my life but I also think it's always good to set new goals or finish old ones. I've accomplished a lot in my twenties. I've failed a ton too of course, but I've accomplished way more.

I ended up taking Friday off even though my birthday wasn't until Sunday. Why not have a 3-day weekend? There is always this pressure to do something big for your birthday. This is especially true for milestone birthdays like the one I just had. And you know what, I thought about it all. I thought about going out of town but finally came to the conclusion that it would be too expensive.  I contemplated having a party but then I decided it would be too much of a hassle. Then I bounced around the idea of a dinner which I squashed pretty quickly. It's too hard trying to get everyone together. So I decided on a nothing birthday.

I started my long weekend with my girl Nicole. We met up for dinner and of course talked for hours about everything and nothing. We always have those conversations that leave me feeling refreshed. It was absolutely the best!

Untitled

Dustin and I went out to breakfast at FirstWatch (best banana granola pancakes in town!) on Friday morning. We ate slowly and talked about everything. We just soaked up the time together. And speaking of time, we had some to kill, so we headed over to Target for a bit before the movie. We got to the theater about 30 minutes before Jurassic World was set to play. We seriously got there just in time because there was not an empty seat by the time the previews started. I found this insane since we opted to go to the 10:15 AM showing. But then I read that they broke all kinds of records (including a Deathly Hallow record - WAH!) so it kind of made sense.

Untitled

Untitled Untitled

Ok Jurassic World. (NO SPOILERS BUT IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW DETAILS THEN SKIP TO THE NEXT PARAGRAPH) Where do I even start? Um, I guess I'll start by saying it exceeded my expectations. I went into this movie knowing it would be decent, good even, but never did I think I would enjoy it as much as I did. And Dustin felt the same way. We were both like little kids with our wide eyes staring at the screen for two hours. The park itself is incredible. It's like a smaller Universal/Disney type place with rides, exhibits, a hotel, and food (Starbucks and Margaritaville make several appearances). Here's the park map. The gentle giants petting zoo is the absolute cutest! The gyrosphere is also pretty damn cool. But I can't believe they aren't on a track. From the looks of things you have the power to drive that little hamster ball wherever you please. Who thought that was a good idea? The dinosaurs themselves were of course wonderful. I was most excited to see the Mosasaurus because holy shit that thing is terrifyingly awesome. The Dimorphodon's scared the shit out of me. Indominous Rex was no fucking joke. And the damn raptor squad (Blue especially) was the shit. Now I was really hoping for a cameo of sorts. Dr. Ian Malcolm? But sadly it didn't happen. The thing is that the cast is really strong without any of the original. Of course Chris Pratt was as charmingly bad ass as ever. Bryce Dallas Howard started prissy and distracted but by the mid-way point you were totally rooting for her. The kids were needed and did a great job but they just can't compare to Lex and Tim. The movie does such a good job paying homage to the original (wait for it...) while still giving the audience a new entertaining story. So can you tell we loved it?

Dustin and I were on such Dino high after leaving the theater when we were suddenly brought crashing down to Earth thanks to one phone call. I had dropped my car off to get 3 new tires (nothing screams 30 like some new tread! I took the nerdy thirty theme to a whole new level!) fully aware that it would be $300. What I was not expecting is to get a call saying that I need an alignment that will cost me another $100. What. The. Fuck. I started Joker laughing at the poor woman on the other end of the phone. I mean, what kind of sick joke is this? So I told her go for it. What's the point in getting new tires if they aren't aligned? I tried to not let it ruin my good dino mood but it was too devastating a blow. $400 gone. And not on anything fun. I spent $400 on straight up boring adult shit. I will say that I'm thankful I could afford it. I'm proud of Dustin and I for always paying our own way. No mommy/daddy hand-outs for us. And honestly, what kind of adult are you if someone else keeps paying for all the things you are supposed to be responsible for? So yeah it sucked. And yeah, I was pissed off for a good hour or two. But life could be so much worse. So I forced myself to get over it.

Untitled

Saturday morning I went to have breakfast with my mom at Shakers. I hadn't been there in almost 2 years - not since before Erin left for Texas. It's one of my favorite little spots in Orlando. I totally forgot to order the grilled blueberry muffin so now I'm going to have to go back real soon. My mom took a photo of me with her disposable camera. Is there anything more embarrassing?! I didn't feel 30. I was more like 15 again and scared my friends from school would witness the whole ordeal. Time might dictate how old we really are but feelings hold a lot more weight.

Once I got home I noticed a couple bouquet of flowers, peanut M&Ms, tic tacs, and the best card in the world on the kitchen counter. Dustin had been a little sneaker while I was out with my mom. What a lucky duck I am. Cody and Kaelin stopped by to wish me a Happy Birthday and give me a present. It was kind of perfect because we still had Cody's birthday present from May. So we just traded. Ha! It was good seeing those two and discussing scooters. I guess you had to of been there.

I spent the rest of the day (and kind of the rest of the weekend) watching Orange Is The New Black (by myself) and Boy Meets World (with Dustin). My actual birthday was nothing special. It was actually quite forgettable. It felt just like any other Sunday. I napped. I TV'd. I ate ice cream. There's just something about birthdays when you're older. I can't quite put my finger on it. They just aren't the same. Or maybe they were never really that great but nostalgia is such a tricky bastard that you never truly can tell. I'm probably coming off super bitter but I'm really not. I just hate the pressure and build-up to a birthday because it's never as good as you expect it to be. But at the same time, it's usually never as bad either. My birthday was like life; it was routine as hell with bits and pieces of really lovely meaningful moments. Thank you to the few that sent me a card, called, texted, wrote on my Facebook wall, and went out of their way to even buy me a present (you really didn't have to!). But thank you so much for thinking of me. It truly means the world to me that you all care. And not just on my stupid birthday but on random days that don't matter (but actually do). You all are like my own little Raptor Squad.

Just when I thought it was over, everyone at work surprised me Monday with a decorated office, flowers, a fun square balloon, a card, and cupcakes. I seriously felt so special which is really the whole point of birthdays. Who cares what you do or don't do - it's about how you feel. And I feel lucky.

Dustin gave me my presents as they came in the mail and I've been using them all so much these past few weeks. He did a great job as per usual.

1. Selfie Stick - I've been getting my selfie-stick on like Donkey Kong. That makes absolutely no sense but rhymes so I'll leave it. I feel like I need to take a class to learn all the different ways to use this thing. As I've said before, I'm still an amateur. But just watch out because I'll be a pro by this time next year.

2. The Bell Jar - I've been wanting to read this for years and now I finally am. I'm about halfway done.

3. Boy Meets World (entire series) - I love this show so damn much. I look forward to cuddling in bed with Dustin every night and watching 3 episodes back to back. It's my favorite part of my day recently.

4. Leather Bag - Dustin knows I don't do name brand, "fancy" but actually tacky handbags. I love satchel purses. I love leather. So what did he give me?! A brand new, handmade in England, leather purse with optional satchel strap. Mic drop! It smells like a damn dream. It took a week or so to really wear it in but now it's perfect. I love how simple yet sturdy it is. Also, this photo doesn't quite show the size. It's not some giant purse but it's got ample room for books, selfie sticks, and whatever else I want to put in there.

What I Wore #23

I never really thought I could pull off a maxi dress but then I tried one on. And what do you know? I actually felt pretty good in it. The fit was perfect but the pattern was ehh. So that started my quest for the perfect maxi. I stumbled across this simple and super comfy dress at Old Navy. It was even on sale which meant it was calling my name. It's basically like wearing pajamas and who doesn't want to feel like that are in their PJs all damn day?! It's got a slit on one side that goes to my knee so I don't feel too trapped while walking around. It's so perfect. Now I just have to not shrink it.

Butterflies and Dinosaurs

Dustin and I drove up to Gainesville last Saturday for more family hangs! Hayley mentioned us going to check out the Museum while Liz was still in town. I thought it was a great idea. First, I had never been to that museum. Second, fam hangs! And third, Katie had just sent me an article about Sue a month ago and I was interested in checking it out.

We all met up at the Florida Museum of Natural History where both Hayley and her boyfriend Greggg work (well, in a different building/department). They didn't have to work, thankfully, and just enjoyed the day with us (and got us sweet discounts). We had a great time walking through the "cave", reading about plants and animals, and walking through the Florida Fossils. The megalodon jaw always freaks me out. It's just so damn big. Dustin could have walked right through it. YIKES. My new favorite prehistoric animal is the Terror Bird (notice the Wikipedia photo is taken from the same museum!) which looks pretty damn terrifying. I mean, that beak looks like it could really do some damage. It's so crazy to think those things were roaming the Earth long ago.

Next up was the Butterfly Rainforest. I wasn't really sure what to expect but it was awesome. Of course the flowers, plants, and water features were beautiful but the butterflies made it that much more so. They were every where. On plants. In the air. On her. On him. On me. I was able to take a slow-mo video of one in particular which was so neat. Just standing in that space made me so happy. Not that I wasn't already happy but you just cannot be upset in any way in a damn butterfly garden. There were also a variety of small birds that we'd see hopping along the path. So fun!

We visited Sue's exhibit last. There was a giant T-Rex skull spinning in circles to our immediate right. Then we moved to the post-it wall. It looked like they were almost all written by children. I wish I had taken a close up of some of them because they were hilarious. And then, there in the center of the room, was Sue. She looked equally awesome and vicious. And huge. We all just stared at her. What a beaut! Then it was time to whip out the self stick.

I know I know, you want to pretend you don't know me when I mention it, right?
Are you questioning our friendship?
It's ok. I get it. I do.
But don't let my love for a selfie stick come between us!

Everyone in our group was totally game for our group selfie with Sue (although Greggg and Dustin were a little hesitant). I think I need more practice with it because we kept cutting someone out of the shot on accident. We did the best we could but I'm still very much an amateur! There was also part of the exhibit called "push and sniff" which I know, sounds super sketchy. It kind of was. Grey told me to try it and this horrible odor came out. Once I lifted the piece it showed a photo of a Triceratops. So I'm not sure what that means. Ha!

We all met up at Satchel's for some pizza, except there was an hour wait for an inside table. We debated whether or not to eat outside but it was at least 90 degrees so we decided to wait the hour for the A/C. Unfortunately we still had an hour to kill in the heat. We spent the majority in the outside dining/gift shop where it was at least shaded. Paul had finished up at work and was able to join us which meant there were now eight of us. My Uncle Paul and Dustin always share a pizza because they are extra meat eaters. The rest of us enjoy meat AND veggies. So we got two pizzas that both had a variety of toppings. Greggg even drew out a diagram so everyone would be happy. It was so smart, kind of funny, and worked like a charm.

The group so kindly let me take home the leftovers. I figured we were about to leave when Hayley said to me "You're going to need to move the box". A confused look crossed my face as I saw a dancing light out of the corner of my left eye. Before I knew it TWO (vanilla and chocolate) cannoli's were being placed in front of me. Now I saw what the light was - CANDLES. Not just any candles but birthday candles. AND not just birthday candles but DINO candles! My family started to sing Happy Birthday to me and I no joke, almost started crying. I know, I'm a sap. But I can't remember the last time I had been surprised like that. In that moment I felt so incredibly loved and cared about. And a little uneasy (in a good way, if that's possible) because all the attention was on me. Big giant hugs to each and every one of you guys. Thank you for getting my birthday week started off right.
