The Love of Letters

I've always wanted a tattoo to represent my love for snail mail. If you know me even the tiniest bit you can attest to the fact that I am a die hard letter-writing, mail-sending freak. I can't remember exactly how it all started but my earliest memories of mail start with my grandma. She and my grandpa always traveled all over the world and would send me postcards from everywhere they went. I remember the excitement of my mom giving me those postcards year after year until I was big enough to get them myself.

Then around 7 or 8 my dearest friend Melody moved away. That didn't stop our friendship from forging on. Sure, we exchanged our parent's landline phone numbers but we also exchanged addresses which cemented my love for not only receiving mail but writing and sending it out. Back in those days things just moved slower. There wasn't the instant gratification of a text message or a Facebook comment. It was the last time letters were still a thing. They were fading with each day but they still were holding on. I am so grateful for all of those letters we sent to each other. The cool part is we still send each other letters. They aren't as frequent but a few times a year we each sit down and write the other one.

Do you remember BOP magazine? Well they had a 'Find a PenPal' section that I of course filled out and sent in. They then matched us with someone else who had submitted the form. I can still remember my Pen Pal's name: Kristi. She lived in the midwest somewhere and we exchanged letters for about a year or two in middle school. We told each other all the hot 12 year old gossip and even sent each other a couple school photos. It was certainly fun while it lasted.

I'm much older now but my love of snail mail still remains. I never hesitate to send my friends or family a card or letter or full on package. I know how excited I get to received something that isn't a bill or junk so I hope they all feel the same way when they see something fun waiting for them in their mailbox. There's just something so personal about sending mail. Every text looks exactly the same no matter who you are talking to but a letter from one person will look completely different from another. A text can be deleted in one tap but a letter is something physical that you can hold and it would take walking to the trash can to throw it away. I know a lot of people don't appreciate letters and mail the way I do and that's totally fine. To each his own as they say. But I urge you in this age of immense technology to sit down once in awhile and put pen to paper and send your thoughts to someone you care about.

With that being said, I am IN LOVE with my newest tattoo. Cortni aka Miss Wild West rocked it yet again. I am so pumped that she is now residing in Orlando which makes going to get work done by her so much easier. I've already got another appointment for September. I'm not done.

PengWIN

June has been a crazy fucking month in the best and worst ways which is one of many reasons my posts have been a little more sporadic than usual. This post I'm going to focus solely on one of the good things that June brought us.

That's right. You guessed it.

The motherfucking Stanley Cup.

Dustin was planning to go to game 5 of the 4th series in Pittsburgh. He had bought a plane ticket. He had worked out an itinerary. It's a long story but he didn't end up making it up there. They lost that game which forced a game 6. Needless to say, Dustin was not happy. Like at all. But hope was not lost.

The date was Sunday, June 12th. This game was so important that we skipped Game of Thrones to watch what could be (and thankfully was) the Cup winning game.  I usually fall asleep by 10:30pm or earlier, but I powered through because I wanted to be conscious if they happened to pull it off. Dustin sat in his chair and I on the edge of the couch and we watched in silence with our eyes glued to the screen. I kept looking at the clock running out of more and more time. Come on guys, please do this. For Dustin. For Fiddy. For Big Al. For Big Al's socks. For Joel. For every bud past and future.

After a really stressful two months of playoffs the Penguins won their 4th Stanley Cup, their 2nd Cup since Dustin and I have been together. I'm not trying to brag and it's probably completely unrelated but the Steelers and the Pens started winning some serious shit when I came into Dustin's life. Just thought I'd throw that out there.

It took a few seconds to hit me that they actually had won. Dustin was at a loss for words. He just jumped around the room silently fist pumping. Olive looked at him like he had lost his damn mind. I looked at him with such happiness. I love the Pens because of him. But his love for the Pens is out of this world so I knew how much it meant to him. Fuck yeah they won!

It was so cool to see all of the players rush the ice and embrace each other. I started to cry actual tears when Dupuis lifted the cup over his head. You'd understand why if you were to read this. I never thought I could care so much about a damn sports team but Dustin's enthusiasm is pretty infectious and if I'm being totally honest borderline obsessive (in the best way). He didn't go to bed until 2am that night and has been on cloud nine ever since. He's bought clothes and a Stanley Cup replica comemorating this win. I'm a little nervous about how big this cup is going to be and where the hell we're going to but it. But I'll find room. There's always room.

Go Pens!

Dustin Says

Me: Did you just fart?!
Dustin: Yeah, I named it Jesse because it was a ripper.

Cheeto's First Vet Trip

Two Thursdays ago Dustin came home from work and noticed that Cheeto was limping. We thought it was strange but both agreed we'd keep an eye on it and see how he was doing the following day.  He had been in a fight days prior but was just now showing any signs of pain. That Friday I took off work as a birthday present to myself. Dustin and I got breakfast and ran a bunch of boring errands but had a nice little morning just hanging out. When we got home we noticed Cheeto was still limping. I called the closest vet.

Me: Our cat has been limping since last night. At what point should we bring him in?
Vet Tech: Oh I would bring him in immediately.
Me: Well in that case, do you have any availability for today?
Vet: We've got a 3pm.
Me: We'll be there.

Dustin loaded up Cheeto in his carrier and we drove less that a mile down the road for his visit. The staff was incredible. The girls at the front were so welcoming and sweet and complimented our big orange cat. We didn't wait long before being taken to the little room. We sat Cheeto's carrier on the table and waited like two nervous parents. Dustin gave Cheeto a little pep talk which made me laugh. As nervous as I was for him, the jokes helped ease me a bit.

Finally a young male vet tech came in and asked us an array of questions about Cheeto. He then checked his joints. Then he left to get the vet. She was very nice and informative. She also checked his joints and noticed an abscess on his front left leg which she pulled off. The vet tech held Cheeto in place but really he was so good. He didn't howl or even whimper. He didn't hiss or kick or even scratch. I was proud of our boy. The vet explained that he probably had an infection that need to be treated with antibiotics. They gave us a choice of 2 weeks of pills or 1 shot. Since the shot was only $20 more we decided to go that route. One and done! They also gave him a anti-inflammatory shot. He was really good through both. By the time they were done the poor vet tech's navy blue scrubs were covered in orange hair. I awkwardly said "Sorry about that." but I guess it's just one of those things that come with the territory.

After we were given a few anti-inflammatory pills and paid our $150 fee we were out the door and headed home. I was so relieved that we went and had him looked at then just waiting it out. I rather be safe than sorry always. He was really good about taking his two pills that weekend. Apparently they smell like yeast which cats love. Who knew?

It wasn't until just a couple days ago we noticed his limp was completely gone. He finally started to put his full weight on his front leg which we were so excited about. We kept Cheeto in the house while he was healing and every so often he would meow at the front door or paw at the back slider to be let outside. We refused since he was not 100% yet. I didn't want to risk him hurting it even worse out in the wild. We let him outside yesterday morning and he went out and then ran back inside. Later on he had his first night out last night. Dustin and I tried to lure him back inside before we went to bed but he was having too much fun chasing lizards. It made us really nervous but we had to just let him be. He was there to greet me at the front door for breakfast at 7am this morning. And the little shit brought us a dead rat at some point last night. So I'd say he had a good time out there. I'm thinking of getting him a cat harness. I know, I know, that sounds incredibly silly and ridiculous but it's the only thing I can think to do to let him enjoy outside without getting injured. I'll keep you all updated on our that idea progresses. Ha!

Thirty One: Part II

My actual birthday fell on a Tuesday. A TUESDAY. How lame is that?! I typically like to take off if it falls on a work day but being that it was in the middle of the week I just said the hell with it and started the day like any other. My very first "Happy Birthday" text came from Nicole L.! I got a few others as I got ready for my day which made me dance around even harder to whatever song was playing on my iPhone. I dressed in my new (yes another one) Flag Day shirt. I was so pumped to finally wear it. I had been saving it especially for this day!

I of course had a little extra pep in my step as I drove to work. There's just something about celebrating yet another year that pumps me up. Yeah, getting older sucks in some ways but the fact that I'm still here getting to do this whole life thing with all the people I love trumps every single crack in my knees or blemish on my face.

When I walked into work and turned the corner I saw something hanging on my office window. As I walked closer I saw that it was a beach ball! Then I noticed my under-the-sea door decor and was just totally blown away. Like whoa, my work family really loves me. And just as I sat down in my chair to take it all in Amanda comes around the corner with two of my favorite things: caramel frap from Starbucks and a banana muffin from WaWa. She stopped at TWO places on the way in just to treat me. I mean, come on!

AND THEN. Oh yeah, there's somehow more.

Nicole S.  gave me a present. I opened it and found a drawing of Cheeto and Olive. CHEETO AND OLIVE. My little fur babies got their own artwork. (Side Note: I'm currently trying to find frames for them so they can be hung immediately in our home!) I no joke started to cry and then immediately hugged her. That's when I noticed that the Luau decor continued into the other room. WHAT IN THE WORLD! I love a good theme and they went over the top by getting Swedish Fish and Goldfish crackers. The cupcakes also had fish shaped sprinkles.

I heard that they wanted to do a Harry Potter theme but had trouble finding decor and props so decided for a beach theme. The beach theme was perfect! I enjoyed sitting in Amanda's comfy beach chair throughout the day. It was beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I remember Erin texting me asking "How was your birthday?" and I replied "SO good. I feel so loved." and she said "You are!" And tears.

I love where I am in my life and I appreciate everything and everyone that is going on this journey with me at this very moment. I know it's temporary because everything is, so I'm just eating it up as best as I can, while I can. Thank you to every single person who sent me good wishes, or got me gifts, or went out of their way to make my day a little brighter. You are all amazing.

So far, thirty one is pretty damn fun.

Thirty One: Part I

I honestly don't remember the last time I did something as a group for my birthday. It's probably been 3 or 4 years. I usually prefer to spend the day alone reading, shopping, getting a manicure, and having a nice little meal. Then Dustin and I usually do something and that's that. This year I'm not sure what came over me but I decided it would be fun to get some friends and my work family together for lunch. My only request is that everyone dress in some kind of flag attire. Red, white, and blue! It was so cool seeing what everyone came up with. I had to buy Dustin a shirt but he was all for it since it has the Millennium Flacon on it. I also bought Pat's shirt which HE PICKED OUT that said "'Merica". He texted me on his way and said "I feel like such a tool." which is when I reminded him that it's what he picked out. I'm sure he'll be wearing it to casual Friday at work in no time.

Katie wanted a drink since she was flying kid-free and went with a mimosa since it was only 12:30. Then Antonia and Amanda come in ordering super fancy drinks. Katie said "I would've gone with a better drink had I known other people would be drinking!!". Just because Dustin and I don't drink doesn't mean our friends can't get their alcohol on. Ha!

We all enjoyed our giant meals and of course cheesecakes. Mmm! I'm still day dreaming about that Caramel Apple Cheesecake (a la mode thank you very much). We're getting married and going on a honeymoon to Cheesecake Land. We can't be bothered.

I specifically told everyone I didn't want any gifts, just a super patriotic meal. The dingleberries all gave me gifts. So sweet, so unnecessary. I really loved it all.

We stood annoyingly in the front of Cheesecake Factory and took photos because shit needs to be documented. Everyone went home except The Benton Family stopped by our house first. We played Catch Phrase and Cards Against Humanity until Addilyn was ready to head home.

This was the Sunday of the Pulse shooting so I had a lot of feelings going on in my emotional head. I was so happy because we had just seen Thrice the night before and I spent a lovely lunch with some of my favorite people. But then of course the tragedy in Orlando hung heavy as well. And then that night the Penguins won the Stanley Cup. It was certainly the most bittersweet weekend of all time. But there was still more good than bad. Always more good than bad.

Thrice Times Two

Dustin, Pat, and I had bought our Thrice tickets for the House of Blues months ago. But then a few weeks ago it was also announced they would be doing a small acoustic show at Park Ave. CDs.  All we had to do was buy their CD or LP at Park Ave. and they would give you a wristband for entrance. So Dustin and I went down there and bought two CDs (one for Pat) and and LP (that we ended up framing and hanging as art in our bathroom).

The three of us had been really looking forward to this whole day. It's always so crazy to me that you look forward to something for what seems like forever and all of a sudden it sneaks up on you. That's how Saturday felt to me.

Pat came over around 11ish and I drove us all to Park Ave. We surprisingly found parking very easily. There was a good line already formed when we got there after 11:30AM. But thankfully we were closer to the front of the line than the back. We settled into our little spot in front of a Sushi restaurant and waited. And waited. And practically sweat to death while waiting. I was so glad we were in the shade although we had all brought hats and sunscreen just in case we weren't so fortunate. I also shoved waters and snacks into Dustin's backpack. I just really prefer being prepared than not. It just makes life easier. I felt like I was 1/10 girls in the whole line. It was a total sausage fest (which is fine). I was just making an observation.

We didn't go inside until about 1:20 even though the whole event was supposed to start at 1pm. I was convinced there was no way all of were going to fit inside the small music store but we surprisingly did. As soon as we made it inside we all ran for the corner. It was an awesome spot minus the card rack that I kept having to work around. Ha! Dustin (Censure not my Dustin) and Teppei played 4 songs acoustically. I had never been to something like that and I had certainly never seen Thrice so close up before. Dustin's voice has really matured over the years in the best way. He mentioned having a bit of rasp because it was still early in the tour but I think he sounded great. Pat said "This was the appetizer to the main course tonight."

After they were done they went to the front counter of the store to sign posters and CDs. They told us they couldn't do selfies or any photos because they were on a time crunch to make sound check at HOB. They literally walked right in front of us. So yeah, our corner spot was bad ass. We were like the 5th people in line and went through meeting each member and shaking their hands.

Me: "Hi, I'm Ashley. Im so excited to see you guys tonight. Well, I'm seeing you now, but you know what I mean."

Pat: "Thank you guys for doing this. Your music is so powerful."

Dustin: "That was a long drive you guys had to make last night. I listen to your baseball Podcast..."

So to sum it up, Pat and I are super nerds and Dustin is totally chill. I swear Dustin could meet the President and not be nervous. I asked him if there was anyone "famous" he'd be nervous to meet and his answer was "Gina Carano". Ha!

We were out by 2pm and starving so we hit up Chipotle. Pat went home and Dustin and I just lounged around for a few hours. Then we were back at it picking up Pat and heading to Disney Springs Downtown Disney. Side note: I hate when places change their name. For example: Orlando Arena was never the TD Waterhouse Centre to me. Nope! So traffic was pretty minimal and we made it over there right on time. But the way the "new" parking is set up is a fucking nightmare. There is never any regular parking (which I totally prefer). The garage at Downtown Disney gives me a straight up panic attack. Each ramp leading to the next floor is way to steep for me to be ok with. After driving in circles and getting into a fight with Dustin for 15 minutes we decided we'd have to go into the anxiety garage. We had to park at the very top because every level was filled to capacity. We made it. Dustin and I made up. And all was fine.

While Pat got his ticket at will call we went to go wait in line except there was one problem. The line wrapped around the building and then some. I've been to shows at HOB where it wraps and I've always just dealt with it but Dustin is not like me at all and he didn't want to walk a mile to the back of the line. Of course I'm all "but we can't just butt in line..." or "but the security guards won't let us..." and he finally talked me into just walking into the front of the line. I felt bad because I'm the rule-follower in this relationship but after that horrendous parking fiasco I just wanted to get into the building. Of course they patted me down and checked my purse. I was told "no outside snacks" in reference to my cheese crackers and pretzels I brought for extra sodium. I was so pissed she made me throw them in the trash. But whatever.

We finally made it inside. While Pat and I used the restrooms, Dustin found the best spot! It even had an "i-phone trough". The waiting is always the worst at concerts and this one was no different. We waited for the actual show. We had to suffer through TWO opening bands. The first one was decent but the second one was cringe-worthy. I honestly don't even want to think about how awful it was. It was the longest set of our lives.

Finally Thrice came on and played for a good hour and a half. We've all seen Thrice multiple times in the last 15 years and they never disappoint. This time was no different. They totally rocked it. It was fun rocking out to new and old songs alike. We didn't have dinner, our feet were sore, we got home late, and we were totally exhausted. But goddamn what a good day!
