That's right. You guessed it.
The motherfucking Stanley Cup.
Dustin was planning to go to game 5 of the 4th series in Pittsburgh. He had bought a plane ticket. He had worked out an itinerary. It's a long story but he didn't end up making it up there. They lost that game which forced a game 6. Needless to say, Dustin was not happy. Like at all. But hope was not lost.
The date was Sunday, June 12th. This game was so important that we skipped Game of Thrones to watch what could be (and thankfully was) the Cup winning game. I usually fall asleep by 10:30pm or earlier, but I powered through because I wanted to be conscious if they happened to pull it off. Dustin sat in his chair and I on the edge of the couch and we watched in silence with our eyes glued to the screen. I kept looking at the clock running out of more and more time. Come on guys, please do this. For Dustin. For Fiddy. For Big Al. For Big Al's socks. For Joel. For every bud past and future.
After a really stressful two months of playoffs the Penguins won their 4th Stanley Cup, their 2nd Cup since Dustin and I have been together. I'm not trying to brag and it's probably completely unrelated but the Steelers and the Pens started winning some serious shit when I came into Dustin's life. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
It took a few seconds to hit me that they actually had won. Dustin was at a loss for words. He just jumped around the room silently fist pumping. Olive looked at him like he had lost his damn mind. I looked at him with such happiness. I love the Pens because of him. But his love for the Pens is out of this world so I knew how much it meant to him. Fuck yeah they won!
It was so cool to see all of the players rush the ice and embrace each other. I started to cry actual tears when Dupuis lifted the cup over his head. You'd understand why if you were to read this. I never thought I could care so much about a damn sports team but Dustin's enthusiasm is pretty infectious and if I'm being totally honest borderline obsessive (in the best way). He didn't go to bed until 2am that night and has been on cloud nine ever since. He's bought clothes and a Stanley Cup replica comemorating this win. I'm a little nervous about how big this cup is going to be and where the hell we're going to but it. But I'll find room. There's always room.
Go Pens!
