Last Friday Katie and I got to see Andrew McMahon together. I have seen him 10+ times but this was her first. I knew what to expect which made me even more excited for her to be able to experience it herself. We had been looking forward to this for months. And then weeks. And then Friday finally came and we were driving down I-4 to Downtown Disney (I still refuse to call it Disney Springs). It almost felt like a wedding. There was so much anticipation and then when the day finally came it was a complete whirlwind.
We found parking fairly easy and I didn't have a anxiety attack this time so already the night was off to a great start. We picked up our tickets at the box office and in HOB we went. We waited in line for some sweet merch (we both got a shirt) and then made our way down stairs to find a spot. Per Katie's suggestion we ended dead center on the second step. Overall we had a very good view although once in awhile we were blinded by a giant pompadour.
Katie and I both loved the first band Night Riots. The lead singer was especially charismatic. We weren't as crazy about Atlas Genius. They didn't have the same presence but still their music was decent. We just weren't blown away.
Andrew of course killed it as he always does.
It's no secret that Zombies On Broadway is my least favorite Andrew CD. As a whole it just didn't do it for me. It's extremely poppy. I miss the indie rock vibes. I miss the piano being front and center. And most importantly I miss Andrew's heartfelt lyrics. This CD wasn't his best by a long shot but he's so talented that it was still good. I don't know if he'll ever be able to create something I absolutely hate but I hope his future records go back to his roots a bit.
Even still, I loved the show. He played mostly songs off his new CD but sprinkled in some old ones which the crowd loved. He even rode around in a giant pool float shaped as a duck AND then a pegasus. It was definitely the highlight of the evening for me. I also loved that he brought out a parachute for the crowd. You know the ones we all played with in gym class as a kid? That was pretty rad.
The only downside of the evening was the fact the girl next to Katie and I kept ripping the gnarliest farts on this side of the Mississippi. Like Katie and I had to lean on each other to keep the other one from falling over from the stench filling our noses. I kept screaming in my head "JUST GO TAKE A SHIT ALREADY!". But she didn't. She just kept on ripping them. Even her farts couldn't ruin our good time.
This nights the perfect shade of dark blue, dark blue.
And it was.
