iPhone 6: An Unofficial Review

Dustin and I both got the new iPhone 6 last Friday. We've had the 5 for two years and were eligible for an upgrade so we went for it. And since we sold both of our old phones to one of those websites it didn't really cost us much! Win win!

I was warned by AT&T that I would lose ALL voicemails once I made the switch so I went on Google to see how I could save them. I have some seriously hilarious and sweet voicemails and some go back years so I didn't want to lose them. If I'm nothing else, I'm sentimental. I found a few options. The first being super simple with the download of an app. Except the app. was like $15. Um no. So then plan B was to buy an auxiliary chord. Dustin and I went to Target to look for one and when I found it he tells me "Oh, I have one of those".

My reaction: -_____-

I had asked him if he had one because I could have sworn he used one when he records his drums to his iMac. Yep, he totally does. So we left Target laughing. I followed the instructions but I couldn't get my damn voicemails on my computer even with the aux. So, I ended up recording them the super ghetto way aka playing them on speaker and recording the audio via Quicktime. The sound quality isn't as bad as you'd think! I just don't get how we can practically do everything with our phones. I mean, we can save photos, videos, texts, emails, etc. but we can't just click save on a voicemail? Just dumb.

So after going through 20 voicemails I finally transferred everything over to the iPhone 6.

SQUEAL!
Curved screen - Scrolling through Instagram has never been so pretty!
Health app - They have a section for a medical ID where you can list your allergies, medication, and emergency contact! Pedometer! It helps you keep track of nutrition, fitness, sleep, etc. Pretty neat!
Photos - Self timer!
Videos - Um, there's slomo now people. Slooooow moooooootion! And time lapse!
Siri is now Sirzam - I never use Siri but now that "she" can tell me what song is playing we just might become friends.
Finger print - I find it so awesome that I can now unlock my phone or buy an app/song with just the touch of my fingerprint. I never had the 5S so this is a whole new thing for me.
Audio Message - I love that you can record something real quick and send it as a text. So fun!
Battery life - Duh! Any new phone has a better battery but it's still so nice.
Sound - The speakers are noticeably louder!
And everything else that I've always loved. Apple FOR LIFE.

I'm an Apple lover but I will admit when I don't like something or if I think they got something wrong. Because they certainly are not in any way perfect. Awesome? Yes. Perfect? No.

GROAN.
Physical Size - Dustin thinks it's great but I still think it's too big. I thought the 5 was the perfect size.
GB -  I think they should do away with 16 GB and start out all phones with 32 GB but it's not a huge deal. I don't have a ton of apps like I used to and unlike most people I transfer my photos/video to my computer/flickr/vimeo. Also, Dustin and I have unlimited data so it doesn't effect us like it does others.
No new emojis - At first I thought there were new emojis but nope. It was an illusion since the phone is bigger, the emojis weren't in their usual place. I think it's safe to say we're ready to retire 80% of the old ones and bring on some that are way cooler. Like a dinosaur. Or a narwhal. And maybe a wand.
Power button - They moved the button from the top to the side which isn't really a dislike but it's annoying. I'm still not used to it.

My biggest complaint with the iPhone 6 is the iPhone 6 case issue. I bought THIS case from Society 6. It's a pretty cool design and seems durable but it's not real solid wood. I've just grown accustomed to real wood. As soon as I can find one I like and won't break the bank I'll be switching out my case. But the one I have will do for now.

iPhone 5

We finally got our iPhone 5's after waiting a whole week! But seriously, the UPS guy didn't even deliver them until 6PM on Friday. We were probably the last stop on his route. Oh well, they are here and that's all that matters.

Dustin set his up right away. I was at the gym so I set mine up once I got home. My set up, however, was not as smooth as his. You have to call AT&T to activate it. Yeah, well I tried calling AT&T with the 5 instead of my 4. I had a long day, geez. I backed up my phone on my lunch break earlier in the day OR SO I THOUGHT. Well, my contacts, photos, and music were all there but none of my apps synced. Dustin noticed that the 'Sync App' button wasn't checked on my iTunes. I freaked. So I went and laid on our bed and downloaded every app - one by one. Luckily, the 5 is so fast, it wasn't nearly as painful as I thought it was going to be. Still a bonehead move on my part. Check that box people!

Things I'm Really REALLY Loving:
-The minute I held it in my hand for the first time I immediately noticed how light it is. A feather!
-The quickness. Holy hell it's so much faster. This LTE shit is no joke.
-The screen is obviously bigger. I love it because I can fit a whole other row of apps now.
-I haven't really played around with Panorama yet (but you can bet your britches I will at the Steeler game and when we ride up the incline! Those are going to be some killer shots.) but Dustin has. He took a picture of our kitchen and living room in one shot. Pretty neat.
-The extra emoticons that were added with iOS 6 are awesome. They have little glasses now! Eeee! Also a shrimp which could come in handy. iOS 6 is just cool period (for more reasons than awesome emoticons.) I know everyone downloaded it a few days ago but it comes standard on the 5's so Dustin and I figured we would just wait.
-The new maps is really cool. The 3D is especially cool.
-The two tone is pretty bad ass looking. At least the black one is. And since it is two tone there is more of a grip. I really hated the iPhone 4 glass back. It was so slippery! It obviously didn't matter with a case on but still.

Other Thoughts:
-Passbook is going to be so convenient once more companies get on board. But I haven't been able to do much with it yet.
-I haven't played with Siri once. She doesn't interest me. Dustin's all over her though. HA.
-I understand why Apple had to change the cable to a smaller version but now I have to change everything. So for the time being I can't charge my phone in my car. Grr.
-I hate not having a case. Like a lot. My case has been pre-ordered even before these suckers were officially announced but probably won't ship until the beginning of October. Until then, I'll keep treating my phone like it's a newborn baby. When Erin asked to look at it I was like sure and then said "Two hands now! Hold his head. BE CAREFUL!". I've turned into a crazy person. Or my crazy has just gone up a notch. Whatever.
-The new headphones are a little too big for my tiny ears. They are kind of uncomfortable but maybe I'll get used to them. I think I'll give them a proper test run at the gym tomorrow.

As I was looking for my iPhone 4 box (so I could send it in for $$), I came across my iPhone 3G. So I decided to do a little photo shoot with all 3. Four years of iPhone.

iOS 5

i tried to update my iphone last night. apparently the rest of the planet tried to do the same thing and servers were not working. my update kept failing. i was annoyed but finally got my iOS 5 update this morning before work.

FAVE NEW FEATURES:

iMessaging - this allows you to send UNLIMITED texts to any other iphone, ipad, or ipod touch. this is amazing for a lot of reasons. first, it's FREE. dustin and i refuse to actually pay for text. i think it's the biggest waste of money and still can't believe people pay for it when you can get the same feature for free with AIM. yes you can IM your friends who also have AIM but you can also use it to send text messages (FOR FREE) to anyone you want. so why pay the $30 unlimited text fee? we never have. so this makes things a bit easier for sending things to dustin and my other iphoner friends. secondly, love the picture text. i am probably the only one who finds this cool because everyone who pays for text has had this feature for years. let me just enjoy this moment of not having to email every picture!

notifications - this update is so much better than the old one. it doesn't interrupt you and it shows up at the top of the screen.

reminders - i love any new app that helps me not only remember shit but helps me stay organized.

DISAPPOINTING FEATURES:

camera app - they now have the camera app button on the lock screen. but not really. you have to double click the home button just to see it. i wish it was on the lock screen at all times for quick access because isn't that the point? to be able to grab your phone fast and not have to go through a bunch of steps to get to the camera? this was quite the let down. (if there is a way to fix this in settings please let me know!)
