Sex and the City

I officially finished watching Sex and the City last night. I actually finished the TV series a few days prior but I wanted to see both movies too. So now I've seen it all - in order.

I loved the TV show. It was mostly funny but it had it's share of tear jerking too. It was smart and sexy and for it's time it really pushed the line. I know a lot of people (my friends included) didn't care for the movies but I really enjoyed both of them. They weren't entirely necessary but I thought they really complimented the TV series well. I didn't feel like they were a complete departure from the show at all. Plus, it was a chance to be apart of that world again.

The photo below is from the beginning of 'Sex and the City 2' where Carrie is explaining where and how she met each of the other girls back in the late 80s. I loved hearing each story and REALLY loved seeing the 80s version of each of them. So much fun!

Each girl is so different and yet they all are such great friends. They just seemed to balance each other out. I could relate to all of them in one way or another. For example, here are the qualities that I could identify with...

Miranda - logical, opinionated, and completely a Type A personality.

Charlotte - hopeless romantic, a little naive and sensitive.

Samantha - potty mouth, selfish, but always comes through in the end.

Carrie - writes about her feelings, non-traditional (no kids!), and always follows her heart.

I'm so glad I ended up watching, even if it was 10 years after the craze. I didn't really understand it back then because it didn't interest me. But I get it now. I totally do. I don't think it's hard to find friends, but I do think it's hard to find friends that will grow with you through the different stages in life. I know these women are fictional but their bond just seemed genuine.

My biggest complaint out of the entire show/movies was Mr. Big. I remember ladies loving Big when the show was on. So it was surprising to me when I started watching the show myself that he was such a dick. Maybe most girls saw him as charming but I just saw a straight up arrogant douche. He treated her like shit and there is no amount of charm that can make me think otherwise. It was entertaining and made for good TV but I just hated every time Carrie ran back to him. I hated that she ended up with him in the end. I feel like they absolutely had this intense romance but I still don't think he was the one for her. He was a great love but not THE love. I honestly would have rather seen her single and happy than with him. Out of all of her long-term relationships, I liked Aidan the best. He wasn't a good fit for her either but he was the best guy she was ever with. Berger seemed great at first but we all soon realized he was just too emotionally immature. And I never liked Aleksandr Petrovsky. Ever. I totally sided with Miranda when she told Carrie not to go to Paris. It brought recent events in my own life to the forefront of my mind.

I really loved all of the other girl's spouses.

Steve Brady - He is just a good guy. He's so easy going and happily deals with Miranda's crazy uptight personality. He's so sweet to her even when she doesn't always deserve it.

Harry Goldenblatt - He's incredibly kind and just adores Charlotte. He's always so supportive and is there for her in all of their ups and downs.

Smith Jerrod - Ok, so he and Samantha didn't exactly end up together but they're still one of my favorite couples on the show. I loved how much he worshipped Samantha. And the scene where he shaves his head for her during her cancer battle - oh the tears!

I think NYC is overrated. There, I said it. TV shows and movies romanticize it and they do a great job. Central Park is beautiful. Carrie's brownstone apartment is a dream! But then there is the constant noise, the constant crowds of people, the rushing, all the walking! Ha! The thing is, I've never been terribly impressed with NYC, mostly because it would probably give me an anxiety attack. It's just too over the top for me. I like cities to be slower paced, watered down a bit. That being said, Sex and the City ALMOST changed my mind. They make it all look so glamorous to live there. Maybe one day I'll visit and eat my words OR I'll visit and have that anxiety attack I predicted. Either way I would definitely go on the Sex and the City bus tour (like in The Newsroom). I hope that really exists.

And a few of my favorite Carrie quotes:

"The most important thing in life is your family. There are days you love them, and others you don't. But, in the end, they're the people you always come home to. Sometimes it's the family you're born into and sometimes it's the one you make for yourself."

"They say nothing lasts forever; dreams change, trends come and go, but friendships never go out of style."

"Life gives you a lot of chances to screw up which means you have just as many chances to get it right."

"After all, seasons change, so do cities; people come into your life and people go. But it's comforting to know that the ones you love are always in your heart. And if you're very lucky, a plane ride away."

"Some love stories aren't epic novels, some are short stories. But, that doesn't make them any less filled with love."

"Sometimes we need to stop analyzing the past, stop planning the future, stop figuring out precisely how we feel, stop deciding exactly what we want, and just see what happens."
