We're also still enjoying The Leftovers. I was sad that my new boyfriend was barely in last week's episode. As much as I'm enjoying the show, I have zero expectations for it. I mean, you kind of have to have that mindset when one of the LOST guys is behind it. With that being said, I do still hope there will be some big time answers eventually. Dustin and I DVR'd a three episode special called The 90s: The Last Great Decade and it was truly interesting. It covered pretty much every major news story from the decade. If you're into stuff like that, you should see if it's on demand.
Listening to: Dustin's been showing me all of Weird Al's new music (& videos) and I've got to say they are just as catchy as ever. I especially love 'Tacky' (his parody Pharrell's 'Happy'). Word Crimes is also awesome because it's catchy and way more educational than any song on the radio.
Pet peeving over: I'm just going to say it...what is up with all of these over the top parties?! More specifically, children's birthdays and weddings/wedding related events. Yeah, I get that the rich have been indulging in fancy celebrations for forever but now it seems as though everyone is participating. There aren't just ridiculous 'Sweet 16' parties anymore. Apparently every age needs to be celebrated in some crazy way. I have never understood inviting 50 people to your house for a baby's first birthday. Or renting a pony for a 3 year old. Why spend all this money on something that they won't even remember and probably won't even enjoy because they are so overwhelmed by the people and attention? I look back on photos of my birthday parties growing up and during the baby years it's just my mom, my grandparents and the occasional aunt or uncle. That's it. As I got older it was McDonald Playplace parties or sleepovers with four other girls and our very own pizza. And it was always the best time! Less is more. And same goes for weddings. I will just never get why people feel the need to spend what they do on ONE DAY. Sure, it's an important day but it's just one day. It comes and goes just like that. And not to be negative Nancy but half of weddings end in divorce. So yeah, it's possible to have a fun, intimate, memorable day on the cheap. And there's today's random pet peeve rant. Ha!
Reading: I just finished 'The Beginning of Everything' which I absolutely loved! (And only $1.99 on Kindle. A steal!) Everyone on Goodreads.com whined over the ending and while it was sad, it was realistic and sometimes that's just as good as the fairytale. In this case I thought it to be very fitting.
Here are some fave quotes:
"The way I figured it, keeping quiet was safe. Words could betray you if you chose the wrong ones, or mean less if you used too many."
"You can always tell when it's Friday. There's an excitement specific to Fridays, coupled with relief that another week has passed."
"Is that a Gryffindor tie?" I asked. "And an official Harry Potter Merchandise sweater-vest," she confirmed smugly. "
"I realized that there's a big difference between deciding to leave and knowing where to go."
"We move through each other's lives like ghosts, leaving behind haunting memories of people who never existed."
I'm currently reading 'A Land Remembered'. It's a best-seller from the 80s about three generations that live in Florida. I had never heard of the book until I read an article about the author months and months ago. I was intrigued because it's all set in Florida from the 1860's to the 1960's. It's not my go-to kind of book but I'm 15% in and so far it's very interesting! I'm so happy that I've stepped out of my comfort zone a couple times this year reading-wise. It's been well worth it. I've been a reading machine this year (this will be book #15)! I will most definitely break last year's total of 16. High five!
