I'd like to preface this by saying I had never heard of this comic before they started to make it into a movie. Dustin kind of filled in everything for me since we heard it was in production. That being said, I was super excited about it. Super heroes in space?! Sign me up. A bad ass raccoon? Let's fucking do this. A brand new movie and not a remake of a remake of a remake? THANK YOU!
So Dustin and I saw it the first weekend it was out a few weeks ago. They didn't offer a regular early time so we ended up going to an early IMAX 3-D viewing. Why not, right? I've only seen 3 movies in 3-D (including this one) and it's not my favorite but I can get through it.
There is so much I love about this movie. I loved the soundtrack which was more than just background music. I felt it added to the overall movie and storyline. I loved the humor. OMG, this movie was hilarious and probably the furthest Marvel has gone comedy-wise. There's a ton of adult jokes that will go way over a kids head. I loved that it was mainly set in outer space because DUH space is awesome and never gets old. There were some seriously beautiful scenes that I need to find on the internet so I can use them as my desktop background. The character's were amazing. Chris Pratt as Star Lord was genius casting. I've loved him since his Everwood days. I watch him every week in Parks and Rec. But to see him as a super hero, one that he plays really really well, was just amazing. I knew I'd love Rocket the Raccoon from the trailer but what I did not realize is how much I would love (LOVE!) Groot. He made me cry on multiple occasions! Yeah, I cried. It's dare I say one of the best Marvel movies ever. Dustin and I can't wait to own it and watch it all the damn time!
Divergent
I finished reading the entire book series at the beginning of this year after hearing about it for awhile. The first book was my favorite of the series so I was hoping the movie would be just as good. Dustin and I had tried to see it when it came out in theaters but March is always a crazy month so we never got around to it. We finally rented it off Xbox Friday night. I thought it was VERY true to the book. I was actually surprised by how true it was because there's a lot to explain and to get through. It was long (2 hr 20 min) but it needed to be. Also, it never dragged so I didn't mind one bit. My biggest complaint with the movie was the Tris and Four/Tobias romantic plot. It was there but wasn't a major part of the movie at all. I remember the book emphasizing their romance a lot more but I could just be remembering wrong. Overall I loved it. Dustin did too even though he said it's a different version of The Hunger Games. He's not wrong. All these dystopian heroine stories are very similar.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
When I first heard a new TMNT was coming out I was ecstatic. Hell yeah! Turtle power! Then I heard Megan Fox was going to be April and I was like NOOOOO. I've just never been a fan of hers. She seems perfectly nice but she is a horrible actress and her face always looks different. So that was strike number one. Then the movie poster was released with the actual CGI turtles. I was not happy. They looked crazy with their super tall, jacked up selves. They were so far from any other versions over the years that I could not jump on board. I told Dustin I didn't even want to see this movie in the theaters. He agreed they looked a little nuts but he was still into it.
We decided a month ago that we'd still go see the new movie in theaters. We went into it with zero expectations and came out having enjoyed it. Sure there were things I wasn't a huge fan of like the fact it took forever for us to actually see the turtles on screen, and also that once we did, there wasn't much downtime of them hanging out in their sewer. Because Michael Bay thinks over the top is better, he makes movies that have a million more explosives or fight scenes. It's dumb but it is what it is. This movie was way more action packed than I expected, a little too much so. The camera didn't stay on a single turtle for more than 2 seconds. The new look of the turtles actually has grown on me. I of course love Donatello the most and pointed out that he copied me with the glasses. Or maybe I was the inspiration behind his new four eyed look? Yeah, probably not. Overall though I thought it was fun nod to our beloved childhood heroes in a half shell. It's already been announced a second one will hit theaters in 2016 but this time leave Michael Bay out and slow it down a bit.
