Resolutions: 2013

HAIR
I made it to the end of May with the whole growing out business.

MONTHLY
  • Read a new book - I read 16 NEW books and re-read 3 (HP) books for a total of NINETEEN books this year. I surpassed my one per month goal and could not be happier about it especially considering I only ready maybe a book or two in 2012.
  • Give or help out in some way - I helped out 20 times over the past year. It ranged from donating to organizations (monetary and/or clothing/house goods) to leaving a big tip for a really good waiter to giving a stranger a gift card.
  • Bake a new recipe - I only baked a couple new recipes. Womp womp.
  • Go to yoga - I went 7 times which only comes out to once a month for about half the year.
  • Write a handwritten letter. - There was only one month in the whole year that I did not write a handwritten letter. Score!

ACCESSORIZE
I've been really good about wearing more necklaces but I still never think to change up my earrings.

SAVE
I wasn't able to save nearly as much as I had wanted but I did save something so I'm happy.

TRAVEL
I made it out of state once (Savannah, GA) this past year. Other than that we stayed around the central FL area visiting Palm Coast, Gainesville, Siesta Key, & Titusville.

OUTSIDE
I didn't do all that great with this one but I feel like I definitely made an effort.

LESS
I got rid of a lot of shit this past year and feel so much better because of it. Less truly is more.

* ** *

My only resolutions this year are to continue to read and save. I'd also like to open an etsy shop. Other than that, I'll let the year take me where it will.

I have deactivated my Facebook. I'm hoping it's permanent but I may need to get it back when and if I am able to open an etsy shop.

Also, the future of my blog is kind of up in the air. Dustin is urging me to keep up with it but I'm really not so sure I want to share so much any more. I haven't made a decision one way or another.

Resolutions: December

Read a new book: Divergent by Veronica Roth - I've been meaning to read this book for 6 months or so now but for whatever reason just now got around to the series. I really liked the story and the whole atmosphere of dystopian Chicago was very intriguing. As a whole, I loved the book. The only thing I really had a problem with was the writing. It was very simply written and although sometimes it's nice not to have to think too much about what words/sentences mean, I wish it had been a little more thought-provoking. I didn't get to use that cool highlight feature on my Kindle once for a quote I wanted to remember because nothing stood out.  Tris will undoubtedly be the new Katniss which I'm totally cool with. At least we got rid of Bella, right!?

Summary from Amazon:
In Beatrice Prior’s dystopian Chicago world, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue—Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is—she can’t have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself.
I also re-read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban to Dustin.
Give or help out in some way:  I donated to Wikipedia after I saw one of their banners. I love Wikipedia more than pretty much anything on the internet. The minute I want to know something or refresh my brain on a specific subject, I go right to Wikipedia and learn so much. I love knowledge and I love learning about things I'm interested in - anytime I want. If they receive enough donations per year they are able to keep the site ad-free so I feel like my money has definitely gone to a good place.

There were two middle school aged kids playing instruments outside the grocery store a few weeks ago. They were hoping to raise money for their band. I made sure to get cash back when I checked out so I could drop it in.

Dustin and I filled up a box full of clothes and glassware and donated it to the Viatnam Veteran's Association.

Bake a new recipe: Nope. Just haven't been in the mood. Oh well.

Go to yoga: Yep. Once. The last time I'll go with Erin. WAHHH.

Write a handwritten letter: I didn't actually hand write it this month but yes, I typed one up.

Travel: Dustin and I found ourselves in Titusville yet again and we were just recently in Gainesville for a day.

Save: Ha! In December? Nope.

Outside: A little

Resolutions: November

My original 2013 resolution post.

Read a new book: I just finished reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets to Dustin but unfortunately this does not count because I've read it before. I am in the middle of another book but it is incredibly long and I haven't had much time recently to devote to reading it. Big fat fail!

Give or help out in some way:  There were a couple kids representing their school band by playing their instruments outside of the grocery store as Dustin and I walked in. I made a mental note to get cash back when we checked out so I could help them out a bit. We also sent a Christmas card to 'Holiday Mail for Heroes'.

Bake a new recipe: I baked old recipes but I didn't try anything new.

Go to yoga: No. I'm really depressed about this one. I need to get my ass in gear.

Write a handwritten letter: I sent out our Christmas card photos and wrote notes on the ones going to people we have not seen or spoken to in awhile. But I can't remember sending out any actual letters this past month.

Travel: Erin and I went to Savannah at the beginning of the month! A whole other state! And just yesterday on the last day of November, Dustin and I drove to Port Orange to enjoy Red Robin with the Benton's.

Save: A little bit!

Outside: Erin and I went to Savannah we spent the entire day outside. It was gorgeous out. Actually, I think I've spent more time outside this month than in recent months combined.

Resolutions: October

My original 2013 resolution post.

Read a new book

That's right, two books this month! I honestly could have gotten three in BUT I'm watching my money - between my trip this weekend and the holidays coming up and blah blah. I'm just happy I read more than one. I would high five myself but that would be weird, right?

I'm clearly on a John Green kick. The first book I ever read by him was 'The Fault In Our Stars' back in March. So my Kindle suggested some of his other books. And I figured why not!

Paper Towns by John Green - I started with Paper Towns and by the first page I was FREAKING OUT. Why? Because of this:

"Our subdivision, Jefferson Park, used to be a navy base. But then the navy didn't need it anymore, so it returned the land to the citizens of Orlando, Florida, who decided to build a massive subdivision, because that's what Florida does with land."

I'll get to the whole Orlando thing in a minute but my first freak out was when I read the part about a subdivision that used to be a navy base. I immediately knew what he was referring to. I used to take swimming lessons at that navy base. I used to watch the navy base's firework show on the 4th of July from my Grandparent's backyard. I remember the construction of the subdivision. And once built, I went to open houses of these beautiful homes, not because we were planning on moving, but just because we wanted to see what the inside looked like. You can see what is now Baldwin Park from across the lake while in the backyard of my grandparent's old house (still hard grasping that it's not theirs anymore). The buildings are the backdrop to all of our wedding photos. That side of town means a little more to me.

And so, the majority of the book is set in my hometown, Orlando, which is beyond fantastic. I have NEVER read a book set here. EVER. It's so cool reading his descriptions of downtown, I-4, and various neighborhoods. It's weird (and also awesome) reading a book where I can see the place he's talking about in my mind because I've been there too. I don't have to imagine it, I already know it. It's a fun way to experience a book.

Side note: According to Wikipedia, John Green was born in Indiana but his parents moved soon after he was born to Orlando.

The whole Orlando thing was awesome but I was really happy that it wasn't the only good thing about the book. The book started out fast and kept on chugging along. I was just as curious as Q to figure out where Margo had run off to. As I read the last part of the book I was disappointed at first but by the time I finished it I realized I had already changed my mind. The ending wasn't what I had pictured but I liked it after giving it some thought.

Synopsis below taken from John Green's website.
Quentin Jacobsen has spent a lifetime loving the magnificently adventurous Margo Roth Spiegelman from afar. So when she cracks open a window and climbs back into his life–dressed like a ninja and summoning him for an ingenious campaign of revenge–he follows.
After their all-nighter ends and a new day breaks, Q arrives at school to discover that Margo, always an enigma, has now become a mystery. But Q soon learns that there are clues–and they’re for him. Urged down a disconnected path, the closer he gets, the less Q sees of the girl he thought he knew.
Fave quotes:
"If I am ever told that I have one day to live, I will head straight for the hallowed halls of Winter Park High School, where a day has been known to last a thousand years."

"It's a penis," Margo said, "in the same sense that Rhode Island is a state: it may have an illustrious history, but it sure isn't big. "

"You see how fake it all is. It's not even hard enough to be made out of plastic. It's a paper town."

"The last time I was scared," Radar says, "I actually had to face a Dark Lord in order to make the world safe for wizards."

"Just remember that sometimes, the way you think about a person isn't the way they actually are."

"Like, each of us starts out as a watertight vessel. And these things happen - these people leave us, or don't love us, or don't get us, or we don't get them, and we lose and fail and hurt one another. And the vessel starts to crack open in places. And I mean, yeah, once the vessel cracks open, the end becomes inevitable…But there is all this time between when the cracks start to open up and when we finally fall apart. And it's only in that time that we can see one another, because we see out of ourselves through our cracks and into others through theirs."

Looking For Alaska by John Green - This book reminded me a lot of 'Paper Towns' but not so much that I was bored with it. Q and Miles seem a lot alike and so do Margo and Alaska. In fact, I didn't like the girls (Margo and Alaska) very much. I didn't get what each boy saw in them but I don't think they knew either. Another similarity with 'Paper Towns' were the pranks. Both books have so many awesome pranks. So awesome that it made me want to go back to high school and try them myself on some people. I enjoyed the little quirks of the characters, especially Miles' love for famous last words. The book has a 'before' section and an 'after' section. Each chapter counts down (Ex: 100 days before…) which made me super anxious to find out what the author was referring to. All in all I enjoyed the book in pieces. As a whole it wasn't my favorite and I feel like there were slow parts but there were also some pretty great parts as well.

Again, synopsis taken from John Green's website:
Miles Halter is fascinated by famous last words–and tired of his safe life at home. He leaves for boarding school to seek what the dying poet Francois Rabelais called the “Great Perhaps.” Much awaits Miles at Culver Creek, including Alaska Young. Clever, funny, screwed-up, and dead sexy, Alaska will pull Miles into her labyrinth and catapult him into the Great Perhaps.

Fave quotes:
"You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking about how you'll escape it one day, and how awesome it will be, imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present."

"So I walked back to my room and collapsed on the bottom bunk, thinking that if people were rain, I was drizzle and she was a hurricane."

Give or help out in some way: I read this post a few weeks ago and my heart just sunk for this little girl and her family. At the end of the post there was an address and a list of things she liked. So I went out and bought her HelloKitty stuffed animal, HelloKitty coloring book and crayons. Dustin took it to the post office for me earlier this week. I have kept up with her story through Instagram and blog posts and I believe she just went home from the hopsital this week. I hope our little package makes her happy. Here's to a fast recovery!

Bake a new recipe: Check! I made pumpkin cupcakes with homemade cinnamon cream cheese frosting.  I made these for our Halloween party and although I think they were a hit, we had so many left over. The recipe made SO many. I was pretty happy with how they turned out. You really can't go wrong with pumpkin.
Go to Yoga: Nope. October was a busy month and I wasn't able to get it in.

Write a handwritten letter: Check!

Save: I did so good with saving this past month. I've noticed I am able to save a lot more the fewer trips to Target I make. I love me some Target but damn does it take all my money. Ha!

Travel: Fail. I went no where!

Outside: It's only just begun to cool off here in Florida and I've been loving every second of it. But even before that, I spent TWO nights outside in the muggy weather for my high school reunion. And last Friday, when it was GORGEOUS out, I sat in my car and ate lunch with the window open. I realize this isn't completely outside but I was close enough by letting the outside in! It's a good start.

Resolutions: September

Read a new book: Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
I loved this book so much and flew right through it. Two days and I was done. It's a very real, non-fairytale, story of teenage love that takes place over the course of a school year (in 1986). It definitely goes deeper than that though. It's heartbreaking in many ways that I didn't expect and I quickly realized  how different Eleanor and Park's lives really are. A great read!

Favorite Quotes:

"Because being assaulted with maxi pads is a great way to win friends and influence people."

"It was the nicest thing she could imagine. It made her want to have his babies and give him both of her kidneys."

"I want everyone to meet you. You're my favorite person of all time."

"She wanted to lose herself in him. To tie his arms around her like a tourniquet."

Give or help out in some way: I have been wanting to do something nice for a stranger on a more personal level for awhile. So while I was at Starbucks, I bought a gift card. The plan was to hand it out at random right then, BUT I had a rough day at work and was feeling extremely anxious with a side of hot flash, so I decided to go home. I still intend on giving this gift card to a stranger but I decided to wait to do it at a time I would be able to enjoy it more. I'm sure Sam and I will hit up a Starbucks at some point this weekend. And I will be ready to HOPEFULLY make someone smile with free coffee. I'll write about how it went at a later date.

Bake a new recipe: I DID! I made these cookies. Dustin and Erin both called them "little nuggets" which they were. They tasted great and had the perfect amount of chewiness, even days after they were baked.

Untitled Untitled

Go to Yoga: I made it TWICE this month.

Write a handwritten letter: I have written roughly two letters per week. Who will I write when Sam returns? Maybe I will start handwriting letters to everyone; even the people I see on a regular basis.

Save: I've been doing really good with this BUT it's also been really hard cutting back on certain things. I just have to keep telling myself it will pay off. No pun intended.

Travel: The only traveling I did was go back and forth to work. Sad sad sad.

Outside: Still hot. Still inside enjoying A/C.

Resolutions: August

Read a new book: I had a very Lauren Oliver kind of month having read THREE of her books throughout August. Yeah, THREE books in a month. I'm a reading machine and as corny as this may sound, I am super proud of myself because of it. Thank you to Dustin for buying me my Kindle. Thank you Kindle for being so fantastic and helping me get my reading groove back this year.

Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver - This is the second book to Delirium. It started incredibly slow. I actually set it aside for a week or so because it was becoming more of a hassle to read than enjoyable. But I pushed on and once I got past the 30% mark on my Kindle, it started to pick up speed. I don't like really going into detail about the plot of books on here because I don't want to spoil anything but I will say this book kind of bugged me. It was more so that a specific (main) character bugged me. But the last page totally took me by surprise, in a wide eyed, jaw on the ground kind of way. And made me download the third book right then and there.

"But you can build a future out of anything. A scrap, a flicker."

* * *

Requiem by Lauren Oliver - The third and final book in the Delirium Trilogy. I really love how well Lauren Oliver tied things together and not exactly in a perfect little bow but enough that made me feel good because it was realistic but not too harsh. It was much more fast paced than the previous book and there were a lot more action throughout. I liked how the chapters went back and forth between Lena and Hana. It was the perfect way to see two different sides of the "war" on love and freedom. I really liked how it ended. It was real and although some things were answered, a lot of things were left up to your own imagination. All in all the trilogy was really well done. Delirium was hands down my favorite and like I've said before does just fine on it's own. But I liked being able to see what became of all the characters and learning about new ones. Each book although related, had a very different feel and much different stories which I think helped them to seem fresh.

"The past has been finding its way in. It bubbles up through the cracks when I'm not paying attention, and pulls at me with greedy fingers."

"We are even free to choose the wrong thing."

"How can someone have the power to shatter you to dust - and also make you feel so whole?"

"This is the past: It drifts, it gathers. If you are not careful, it will bury you."

* * *

Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver -

From Amazon:

What if you had only one day to live? What would you do? Who would you kiss? And how far would you go to save your own life?

Samantha Kingston has it all: the world's most crush-worthy boyfriend, three amazing best friends, and first pick of everything at Thomas Jefferson High—from the best table in the cafeteria to the choicest parking spot. Friday, February 12, should be just another day in her charmed life.Instead, it turns out to be her last.

Then she gets a second chance. Seven chances, in fact. Reliving her last day during one miraculous week, she will untangle the mystery surrounding her death—and discover the true value of everything she is in danger of losing.

I became interested in this book thanks to this book review. It was everything I was hoping for. I've heard it described as 'Mean Girls' meets 'Groundhogs Day' and that's very true but I feel like it had more depth. I loved the character development throughout. Samantha was someone I cringed at, in the book and the Samantha's of real life, but she really becomes a person that you are cheering on and in the end are proud of.

"Popularity's a weird thing. You can't really define it, and it's not cool to talk about it, but you know when you see it. Like a lazy eye, or porn."

"A good friend keeps your secrets for you. A best friend helps you keep your own secrets."

"Here's another thing to remember: hope keeps you alive."

"I suppose that's the secret, if you're ever wishing for things to go back to the way they were. You have to look up."

"That's when I realized that certain moments go on forever. Even after they're over they still go on, even after you're dead and buried, those moments are lasting still, backward and forward, on into infinity. They are everything and everywhere all at once. They are the meaning."

Give or help out in some way: I wish I could have done more this month in terms of donating or helping. I'm going to try and make up for it in September! I did enter a Breaking Bad contest in which all proceeds benefit the Kind Campaign. Sure, winning would be awesome but chances are slim to none and that's totally fine. I honestly don't think I would have entered at all if it hadn't benefited a good cause.

Bake a new recipe: FAIL. AGAIN. Oh man I suck so bad at this resolution. I have got to get my act together.

Go to Yoga - I have no excuse. I just didn't go even though I wanted to. Ugh.

Write a handwritten letter - Yep. Several in fact. Writing fool!

Save - A little bit!

Travel - Nope. We didn't go anywhere! Grr.

Outside - HA. Haha. Have you been outside in Florida lately? Yeah, exactly.

Read a new book - Delirium by Lauren Oliver - This is another dystopian love story BUT it's a lot different than the other ones I've read recently.

Synopsis: In Lena's world, love is seen as a disease. Everyone is "cured" with a procedure around their 18th birthday. Lena is just a couple months away from receiving the cure when, well...I'm sure you can guess.

I really loved this world that was painted as so normal from the one we live in now yet vastly different. And what a neat concept! I always notice the very small things we all seem to take for granted in books like this. It really makes you think.  I was hooked from the first few chapters on. I'm now on the second (it's a trilogy). I somehow feel that the other two will not live up to the first one. I'd be fine with that because the first one stands just fine alone.

Word on the street is the book was being turned into a TV show starring Emma Roberts but as of May 2013 FOX didn't pick it up. So I'm not sure if it will ever see the light of day. I kind of prefer it being turned into a movie though. Fingers crossed that will still happen eventually!

Fave quotes:

"You can't be really happy unless you're unhappy sometimes."

"It's so strange how life works: You want something and you wait and wait and feel like it's taking forever to come. Then it happens and it's over and all you want to do is curl back up in that moment before things changed."

"Everyone you trust, everyone you think you can count on, will eventually disappoint you."

"Sometimes I feel like if you just watch things, just sit still and let the world exist in front of you - sometimes I swear that just for a second time freeze and the world pauses in it's tilt. Just for a second. And if you somehow found a way to live in that second, then you would live forever."

"I know the past will drag you backward and down, have you snatching at whispers of wind and gibberish of trees rubbing together, trying to decipher some code, trying to piece together what was broken."

"It's hopeless. The past is nothing but a weight. It will build inside of you like a stone."

"We should be protected from the people who will leave us in the end, from all the people who will disappear or forget us."

"I guess that's just part of loving people: You have to give things up. Sometimes you have to give them up."

"Love, the deadliest of all deadly things: It kills you both when you have it and when you don't."

"One of the strangest things about life is that is will chug on, blind and obvious, even as your private world - your little carved-out sphere - is twisting and morphing, even breaking apart."

"Life isn't life if you just float through it. I know that the whole point - the only point - is to find the things that matter, and hold on to them, and fight for them, and refuse to let them go."

Give or help out in some way - I bought this tank from Target. That simple gesture helped provide approximately 12 meals for children and families across the US. Check out the complete FEED line here. I love the tank itself. It's actually turned into my go-to shirt while working out or just hanging around the house. I love it even more knowing that it helped someone. I will definitely be buying more stuff from the line.

Bake a new recipe - Fail.

Go to yoga - Fail. I WANTED to but I just had other Saturday plans this month.

Write a handwritten letter - I feel like this would be the hardest thing for most people but it feels so natural to me to write, with my hand. So yeah, going strong with this one.

Save - Yes which makes me really happy!

Travel - We visited Titusville and Cocoa Beach this month. Not terribly far but far enough that I'm going to count them both.

Outside - Other than the photo shoot we did out in nature a couple weeks ago, definitely not. It is miserably hot and icky and sticky and gross. It's summer in FL so it's all to be expected. I just feel like during the fall/winter, I want to be outside all of the time. I want to run around (like an animal or small child) because the cool air energizes me unlike this humid hotness. I think I'll just pick this resolution back up around October.

Read a new book - I Can Barely Take Care of Myself: Tales From a Happy Life Without Kids by Jen Kirkman - This is my new favorite book. Not only is it entertaining and hilarious but I related to just about every story she told about her child-free life. This book made me feel less crazy and less alone in this decision. I also think Jen and I would be great friends even if the friendship was only based on our mutual disinterest of children. But I bet we'd have even more in common. For example, she likes to tell jokes and I like to laugh! So yeah we're a perfect match! I highly recommend this to all women. I think mothers especially could take something away from it. And to all the non-mothers, this book is such a comfort. Jen is my hero.

I could quote this book all day long but here are my favorites:

"I pretty much have the ability to do whatever I want, whenever I want because I don't have children."

"The way most people feel about loving being a parent is exactly how I feel about not being a parent."

"Now, I don't think having a child makes you a conformist and I don't think that not having a child makes you a non-conformist - but I do think that following your heart no matter what other people have to say takes a real sense of self."

"I don't understand what's so great about having kids when I'm faced with the fact that at some point my kids would disappoint me - just like I disappointed my parents."

"I'm not only having a second childhood, I feel like I'm finally having a first. The last thing I want to do is bring a kid into all of this fun, leaving me to become the chaperone."

"I see parents all the time who get a kick out of saying, "I only like my kids. I don't like other kids." But if a single woman without children says, "I don't like kids," she sounds like a sociopath."

"When I'm in love with someone it doesn't dawn on me to want to have their baby. I just don't think I've ever had that urge to...ruin our lives."

"I had no idea that marriage was only supposed to be between two people who wanted to get between the sheets and make more people."

"Becoming a mother doesn't automatically make you a selfless person."

"I'm not a mother but I'm a nice person, sure. And I'm a nice person because I'm usually in a good mood and I'm usually in a good mood because I'm not responsible for raising a child I don't want."

"It's time for the bullying from breeders to stop. Are children the only thing you guys can talk about? When you're not talking about your own pregnancy you're talking about how everyone else should be pregnant. Did you forget that you used to have interests and hobbies and opinions about things other than my uterus? We childfree ladies are tired of defending our positions on something that doesn't need defending."

On a side yet related note: I've still got my super long post on all of my reasons for not wanting children in my 'drafts' section of this blog. I keep adding to it. I keep deleting things. One day I'll be as brave as Jen Kirkman and put it all out there for the world to see.

Give or help out in some way - Clothes donations and a little something for a friend.

Bake a new recipe - FAIL.

Go to yoga - Yes! Totally made it once this month. Better than nothing.

Write a handwritten letter - I've written many handwritten things now that Sam is no longer in the same city as I am. Also, I sent out a slew of postcards to all my girls. Just because I wanted to say hello. And I think we all like getting something other than bills in the mail.

Save - A tad. But not nearly as much as I would have liked. I had so many other stupid things to pay for.

Travel - Check! The gulf coast of Florida was such a dream. I'm so glad we made it over there.

Outside - Nope. I'm pretty sure I will fail at this one until October. It's hot as balls out there.

Resolutions: May

Hair - Hahahahaha. Ha. HA. Well...yeah. I chopped it off and don't regret a thing. I'll write a separate post about the experience because hair always deserves it's own post.

Read a new book - The Age of Miracles by Karen Thompson Walker. I finished this within 48 hours of starting. It was absolutely wonderful. I always love a good coming-of-age story but this one has a little sci-fi twist. It was just such a fresh and interesting story. I hear it's going to be made into a movie at some point which is exciting!

My favorite quotes from the book:

"But I guess it never is what you worry over that comes to pass in the end. The real catastrophes are always different - unimagined, unprepared for, unknown."

"My friendships were disintegrating. Things were coming apart. It was a rough crossing, the one from childhood to the next life. And as with any other harsh journey, not everything survived."

"And this one fact seemed to point to other facts and others still: Love frays and humans fail, time passes, eras end."

"We told stories and we fell in love. We fought and we forgave. Some still hoped the world might right itself."

Give or help out in some way -

I made a pledge to Kate Earl who needs help so she is able to go on the road this summer with her son. Such a great artist and an amazing mom.

I also bought an Oklahoma Benefit Tank Top where all proceeds went to help those effected by the horrible tornados.

And finally, I bought puppy food to donate to ARNI (in Daytona) except I forgot it was in my trunk. It's still in there, I just have to get back over to Daytona soon so I can drop it off. They have lots of babies and need all the donations they can get so I might try and buy some more.

Bake a new recipe - And CHECK. Nutella Swirled Peanut Butter Banana Bread

Go to yoga - I couldn't remember if I had been in May but according to FourSquare I was there May 4th. Score!

Write a handwritten letter - I did indeed. It went in the mail last week.

Save - I actually was able to a little bit for once. Such a great feeling!

Travel - Palm Coast/Flager Beach! East Coast what up. Hey Gulf, I'm coming for you next!

Outside - Nope not really. It's hot and muggy and sticky and A/C is just so dreamy.

Resolutions: April

Hair - My hair is getting so long! It feels like it's taking forever to grow though! I got it trimmed just the slightest a few days ago because I hate hate frayed ends. Not cute. But I'm still growing it out. And I have decided to donate it to Locks of Love once I do finally chop it off. Hoping to make that happen this summer.

Read a new book - The Spectacular Now by Tim Tharp. I'm not sure really how to explain how I feel about this book without giving things away. Umm. It was enjoyable. It was entertaining. But the characters were lacking depth. The ending was realistic and I liked that, but I also felt nothing when it ended. That's how I knew it wasn't a great book. The greatest books in my opinion leave you feeling some kind of emotion. It was an entertaining book but nothing beyond that. The movie adaptation is supposed to come out later this year so I'm looking forward to see how I feel about it.

Give or help out in some way - I was able to do quite a few things this month!

T-Swift - I offered to send a perfect stranger (that I sat next to at the concert) Taylor Swift photos for his daughter. I emailed them the next day.

Flat Savannah - I'm going to write a whole post about this but the short and short of it is, I'm helping a second grader I've never met, who lives in Ohio, with a school project.

Color Me Rad 5K - The portion of the proceeds went to Ronald McDonald House which was reason enough to do it.

Be the Good - I bought THIS print to support the Salvation Army Boston Emergency Services Fund.

Bake a new recipe - I made 'no butter' chocolate chip cookies. I wasn't trying to be healthy or anything, we just ran out of butter. The consistency is a little different but overall they taste like any chocolate chip cookie.

Go to yoga - I made it once this month. Better than nothing.

Write a handwritten letter - Fail. And I have even had a reminder go off daily on my phone to do it. Life gets in the way. I let life get in the way.

Save - April was a big birthday month so yeah no saving going on over here!

Travel - I didn't leave the center of Florida. Wah!

Outside - I walked in my first 5K outside, in the Florida heat! Give me some credit. Played basketball. Got rained on at Lake Eola.

Resolutions: March

My original 2013 Resolution post.

Hair - It's there. Being it's stupid annoying self. I don't know why so many girls LOVE having long hair. It's a pain in the ass to wash, dry and straighten/style. Also, I feel like it's so heavy and hot. It's always sticking to me. Ugh! But I'm chugging along.

Read a New Book - This was a really good month for reading. I think I'm officially out of my reading funk!

Safe Haven - I have to be honest. The only reason I even read this was because it was only $5ish on my Kindle. But I did actually really enjoy it. I thought it was a lot more thriller than romance but the story was really well done. I can't wait to see how the movie stands up.

"Besides, every couple needs to argue now and then. Just to prove that the relationship is strong enough to survive it."
"I'm not sure anyone's life turns out exactly the way they imagine. All we can do is try and make the best of it. Even when it seems impossible."

The Lucky One - I've had this book for over 6 months and never once picked it up to even attempt to read it. But I was able to finish it in just 2 days. It was a entertaining read but not my favorite from Nicholas Sparks. But I did like the book a lot more than the movie.

The Fault In Our Stars - This has quickly moved to the top of my 'fave books of all time list'. It's one of those books that has stayed with me (Like Perks of Being a Wallflower and Siliver Linings Playbook). It's been days since I've finished it (today is March 9) and I can't stop thinking about Augustus Waters and Hazel Grace. It was smart, romantic, witty, tragic, real, sarcastic, and absolutely heartbreaking. It ripped me apart emotionally. I sat in my bed sobbing through most of the book. Dustin kept popping in to check on me. It was rough. So I'm probably not selling it with those last sentences but trust me, it's worth your time.

"That's the thing about pain, it demands to be felt."
"Most parents don't really know their children."
"Some infinities are bigger than others."
"My thoughts are stars I can't fathom into constellations."

Give back - The last time I was at Tasty Tuesdays with Erin, we hit up the Yum Yum Cupcake Truck as we always do. Every time you buy a cupcake they will mark/hole punch one of their cards and then you get a free one after buying so many. I bought one for myself and one for Erin which meant I could get another cupcake for free. Dustin has been really good about his diet lately and told me specifically not to get him one. I didn't NEED another one although I certainly wanted one. So I told the guy working on the truck that night to give my free cupcake to the next person who comes up. He seemed taken aback as did Erin. It's such a small thing but I know if it were me I would be super excited to randomly get something for free. I don't know who ended up getting it but I sure hope it was the sweetest cupcake ever.

Side (yet related) note: Sometimes I am too hard on myself about giving back. But I am constantly reminded that it's not about the amount of money you are able to donate. It's about doing something nice for others.

Go to Yoga - I received an email from the Yoga studio I frequent asking where I had been. It was a good yet sad reminder that it had been a month+ since I had gone to a class. So when Erin asked me to go on March 9th I was all for it.

Write a handwritten letter - I sent a handwritten postcard!

Save - Not this month. BUT I was able to pay off my iMac so I still feel like a winner.

Travel - Dustin and I went to Tampa for our anniversary so I'm going to say that counts. We traveled on the highway through a few counties so yeah it counts! It was nice to get out of town for a bit even if it was only an hour away.

Outside - Dustin and I have really been taking advantage of the basketball court in our new neighborhood. We bought our first basketball (as a couple) and have been shooting hoops several times a week. I'm terrible but I have a blast anyway. Dustin was definitely a bit rusty at first but then he kept getting 3 pointers and I was all kinds of impressed. One time we even went to the court WITHOUT our phones. It was just us, the ball, and a set of keys. We walked there and then played for a whole hour by ourselves. It was humid as hell and we were gross and sweaty but it felt good. It felt like the 90s. Like when I was a kid. We focused on having fun with a rubber ball instead of checking the latest status update. We took granny shots instead of worrying about the best snapshot to post to Instagram. We ran around like idiots laughing instead of running to our phones with every iMessage "BING!". We just enjoyed being. The sounds of kids riding by on their bikes. The sound of dogs barking in the distance. The sun setting behind the trees. The passing cars. The sounds of millions of critters. It's hard to describe the feeling but I hope to have it again really soon.
