Sometimes Sweet (one of my favorite blogs out there) started these journal days. She gives her readers a prompt and we all write about it. How awesome, right?! Write! Read more about it here.Describe a "first" (first date, first lie, the first time you experienced something, first time in a particular setting, etc). Include as many details as possible to paint a picture.
It was around 4:00 pm when I mustered up enough courage to leave my house, head out on the highway, to meet a boy I didn't know. He had contacted me a month prior via a little social networking site called myspace. He was 'myspace friends' with my best friend, Katie, when he saw my picture in her 'top eight' (remember those?! haha). They both went to the same high school in a small town on the coast of Florida. A town that I didn't even know existed until I met my Katie. So we started out instant messaging on AIM. Then we moved to phone calls. The phone calls became more frequent and lengthy. Our longest conversation (my longest on a telephone ever) was seven hours. SEVEN HOURS!
So there I was in my seafoam green Ford Probe, driving in the rain, listening to The Postal Service, on my way to finally meet this boy. This boy seemed different from the start and although I knew what I was doing was absolutely insane, I couldn't stop myself. I knew if I didn't meet him I would regret it for the rest of my life. I played out scenarios in my head during the hour long drive. All of these 'what if' questions were also filling up my brain. It was all I could do to concentrate on the actual driving part especially as the rain made the road less and less visible. When I started getting close to the exit, I pulled out the piece of paper I ripped out of a school notebook that had the directions on it. Take the second exit. Take a right. McDonald's on the right.
I pulled into the local McDonald's with my heart pounding. Butterflies in my stomach. I was almost shaking with excitement and hope. I remember him pulling up next to me in his red Ford Thunderbird. I got out of the car and we exchanged a casual greeting followed by a hug. Soon after, I followed him back to his house where I got to meet his dog, Spike and his mother. I can remember the smell of laundry as we went into the house through the garage. We sat in his room and talked for a long time. We watched random tv shows to take off the 'first meeting/first date' pressure. Later on, he drove me to dinner. We sat in a table just for two and although I can't remember what we had, I do remember laughing a lot. It was unbelievable how comfortable I was with him. After dinner (which he paid for), he gave me a tour of this little town I had heard so much about. It was dark and still rainy out, Straylight Run was playing in the background and I felt this rush of happiness. We somehow ended up at some fancy hotel on the beach which we just so happened to sneak into. Looking back I think we did it just to say we did because we only walked around the pool and decided to leave. He took me back to his house where we stayed up late talking. We finally decided to go to bed (yes, we only slept) and as we were laying there in the dark he whispered "can i kiss you?". We had one absolutely perfect kiss and then we went to sleep.
It turns out that day was St. Patrick's Day. The day of our first meeting, our first date, and our first kiss. We got married on that exact day five years later.
