9/11

This is my favorite 9/11 inspired song.
I had no idea until today when I went to songmeanings.net that it was so controversial.
But I think that's why it's so great.
Woke up to a brand new skyline
We licked our wounds and mourn the dead
Swallow the story hook and sinker
Is that what we meant when we said
That we never would forget?

I remember being in my 2nd period American History Honors class, junior year, when we first heard about the planes crashing into the Twin Towers. My teacher received a call and told everyone but none of us really understood the severity until we arrived to our next class. The rest of the week was a blur. We didn't do any work in any class. The news was on the TV in each of my classrooms. We all just sat at our desks and watched.
I remember in my English class having to write about it.  My teacher just wanted us to write about our feelings. She didn't grade them. I don't even think she looked at any of them. She handed out envelopes for us to put them in. I sealed mine shut and I didn't read what I had wrote for a good 5 years later, when I found it stuffed in my desk drawer.
It's one of those things you never forget.
